“Legend of Ultira” was supposed to be released in 1988 for the NES, but the game mysteriously disappeared from production along with the company that developed it. Decades later a copy of the game finally turns up in a long-abandoned cabin, along with a dead body and references to an urban legend known as “The Cackling Man.” Whatever happened here is about to happen again. Something has awakened in the woods, and it’s coming for you. You can already hear the cackling. Can you solve the mystery behind a cursed video game and a strange occult ritual before midnight? Or will you be the next victim of the Cackling Man?
250 escape rooms
I actually had low expectations for this room because it was a non-private pop-up escape room. But surprisingly, I had a great time! Yes, even with the other group of 6 with us. The cabin room revolves around a haunted video game. The NES video game is wholly original, designed from the ground up for this room, and plays like a mix of Legend of Zelda, Secret of Mana, and Dragon Quest. A bit clunky, but very impressive considering the entire room is based on multiple puzzles that connect the video game world and the cabin itself. The story is told through discovered videos and actually plays a huge part in the game itself. The ending makes it all worthwhile. Despite not having huge production values and being a public room in the center of a loud anime convention, I had a great experience with Cabin of the Cackling Man! It’s a good choice for the anime/gaming community. We even got the hall of fame record!
