Amazing. Here we are talking more about an immersive experience than an escape game strictly speaking. From the moment we book, we are immersed in the story, I have never had such a realistic experience. Magnificent settings, a well-crafted story, surprising characters, we quickly become the hero of our own story! The best in the entertainment market! Thank you for this moment.

Did I just find my new favorite game … literally thousands of miles away from home??

From start to finish, this place does immersion RIGHT. From detailed lighting, to in-character actors (and employees,) to fun and memorable puzzles, to multiple “WOW!” Moments. Well done.

A good escape room and an amazing narrative experience. The Magician of Paris is on its own in my top 4 escape rooms so far.

The story has the makings of a great one, but is not focused enough as I'd like it to be. You are tasked with sneaking into the magician's apartment to steal his disappearance powder. After peeling away the hidden layers of his home, just as you are about to abscond with the powder, you come face to face with the man himself. He leads you back to the apartment you just robbed for a magic show. He treats you to a card game after which he locks you up, so you destroy his vanishing machine... as revenge I suppose..?

Why the game succeeds narratively I believe centers on the magician and his presentation. Before you meet the magician, you see his home, his journal and his workshop for magic experimentation, you get a feel for him, his eccentricity and his struggles. Meeting him is just the final piece of the presentation. The magician himself is played brilliantly by the GM. His face is covered and he doesn't speak except through pantomiming through pre-recorded lines but he conveys so much through his gestures and body movement. If you leave traces of your trespassing in the apartment, he will react to it, and the card trick scene is an awesome cinematic moment. The martyr who first guides you to the magician's house is also a cool charcater, but his sacrifice at the end (at least when you play with 2 players) is kind of forced.

It's obvious the story would benefit from more coherence: a better defined motivation for both the magician and the player characters. Are we the players there to steal the powder or destroy the machine, or how does one lead to the other? The magician himself, as magical as he is, could have better characterization. I see him embodying a Saul Goodman type character: a trickster that aspires to elevate his craft to a higher art, but resents the upper classes for relegating him to a low class position. Also, I would make it more political: are we the players really coming to steal a valuable asset from a downtrodden underground neighbourhood? Then we should be branded as the villains of the story! (I think the story hinted at this but they could have emphasized it more).

The puzzles are good, but relatively few, observational and simple. The sarcophagus is the most memorable thing but it's not because of the puzzle aspect but rather the player interaction aspect. The room also follows a trend of Paris rooms to end with a reaction speed/coordination puzzle which I feel is underwhelming. I feel they could have incorporated more exploration of the magician's psychology and inventions through puzzles. As it is, the TERPECA standing of the room seems to mainly come from the great showmanship of its GMs, unique setpieces and the first draft of a great story.
