1408 Escape
Brighton Asylum
Escape room
IRL
Although I enjoyed the puzzles and the structure itself, this escape room uses a lot of audio clues. This normally wouldn’t be an issue, but when I was there the sound bleed from Brighton Asylum was extremely loud, making it very hard to figure certain things out. I had fun, but there were many external frustrations that really affected my enjoyment here. I don’t know if the escape room is open all year round though, so maybe this is less a concern when it’s not October

This is a fun intermediate escape room with a delightful little company. It’s in a small office building with a modest budget, so don’t expect anything too lavish, but the puzzles were very well done. I found the staff and game master lovely and you could tell they really enjoy what they do. I would recommend this one for players new to escape rooms, or looking to try out being a smaller team

Probably the easiest room at this location, but not a cake walk either. We did need a hint for one clue that we absolutely would not have arrived at - and then it was like DUH. The room needs some tender love and care though that would alleviate that. We were surprised how quickly we got out haha

Really great theme and atmosphere, and very well executed. This isn’t the most challenging escape room I’ve done, but the level of immersion was high quality, and going between train cars is a blast

Don’t get me wrong, I had a great time! And this is a very unique idea for an escape room. But it is maddening that some of the puzzles are obfuscated by the fact that they…just don’t make sense (namely I recall a puzzle involving matching colors where the colors themselves….didn’t actually match). There are some video clues that only frustrate because you have to take time to listen to them closely…all while your clock keeps ticking. With a bit more attention to detail and some improvements, this room could be awesome

This room exceeded my expectations on all fronts. I’m also an escaper who tends to enjoy hi tech / sci-fi rooms less than others, but this may have changed my mind. I did this room with just one other person, who is also a pretty experienced escape game artist. It was pretty ambitious of us to tackle this as a pair, and I definitely frantically had to beeline from end to end of the room. But it was a blast, and very very challenging, but never obtuse. Up there with one of my favorite rooms I’ve done.

Another great addition for The Escape Game! This is one of my favorite escape room companies and they’re always very high quality with great puzzles and varied themes. Staff and games masters are also personable and top notch. This game is one of the most high tech and even video-game like I’ve done. It’s very smart how the room has a number of puzzles (others more challenge than puzzle) that require verbal communication between players to operate. I can see how one of the final puzzles could be frustrating for some, but it was a great way to make sure everyone in the room was involved and teamwork was the only answer There’s an also a fun tag at the end of the game! Generally I am less inclined towards sci fi escape rooms, but this made me more of a believer :)

5 Wits Nyack in General: this company makes a big deal out of making sure you know this is “not” an escape room. But I actually think they do themselves a disservice that way! I’m a very avid escape room escaper, and I was VERY taken by 5 Wits! The immersive nature of each themed adventure here is extremely high quality and well done. This approaches Disney theme park quality, and that of my favorite escape room company: The Escape Game. The staff is great and I appreciate the reveals in each adventure as well as their cute intros, and that you get a score at the end (which for me helps keep it competitive even though you always technically “escape”) This room: this all feels very high budget! It’s really impressive. The puzzles are fun and active (you must move, maneuver, transfer objects across rooms, and then also play a big touch video game at the end). The last room is REALLY cool, but also quite tough if you don’t intrinsically think like you’re in a video game. For me, this was the weakest of the three rooms here, but that is by no means cause for a poor review. Also, love the Portal references :)

This was a very fun, well made escape room with high quality set design. Definitely spooky! But never scary. You are split into two groups so I’d recommend 2 or 4 people, but not 3 or your stray friend will feel lonely for a while!
Down The Rabbit Hole
Amazing Escape Room - Montclair/Bloomfield

Very fun Alice in Wonderland theme! Not particularly challenging, but good puzzles and lots of fun. The strange dreamy piano renditions of pop songs at the beginning where a choice, but still amusing. Main frustration was added difficultly as a result of some poorly constructed game pieces and/or wear and tear, but that’s about it
