Born from the minds of Sid Phoenix and David Alwyn (credited as Writer and Director respectively), SHERLOCK marked CtrlAltRepeat’s evolution from streamed theatre to creating fully interactive, immersive experiences. It was exceedingly ambitious, and a huge risk. At the time, no one had attempted an immersive show with more than a few actors, and no one knew whether the Zoom format could withstand something of the scale more usually associated with in-person immersive theatre. Supported by stalwarts of the London immersive theatre scene in Rachel Waring, Rebekah Finch, James Dillon, and Tom Black; convinced that the rest of the company would rise to the challenge, Sid and David put together SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE SYMMETRIC MAILSHOT in a total of ten days. It was transformative. Wildly successful both critically and commerically, the run extended no less than three times, culminating in the company’s first major award when it was recognised with an Online Commendation from The Off West End Awards. During the show, the audience were inducted in to the exclusive Baker Street Irregulars, and found themselves quickly whisked up in to the world of an entirely original mystery. They interacted directly with a cast of more than 10 different characters, each played by an individual actor. Some were familiar to fans of the world’s Greatest Consulting Detective, and some were new arrivals. From the living room of 221b Baker Street to the exclusive La Voyante club, run by a mysterious proprietor known as “The Woman”, CtrlAltRepeat created a world the likes of which had never been seen over Zoom before. SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE SYMMETRIC MAILSHOT cemented them as purveyors of the finest escapism, and allowed the audience to disappear in to an immersive experience unlike any other.
