Temporarily Closed - As the story goes... In the late 1870's the infamous Sam Bass would return to Denton with his new-found fortune of gold coins acquired during the historic heist of the Union Pacific Rail in Big Springs, NE - still the largest rail robbery to this day. The Sam Bass gang would continue their crime spree of robbing stagecoaches and trains across a 25-mile span of Dallas, hiding out in the thicket of rural Denton. In 1878, during a stagecoach heist gone wrong a sheriff would catch the gang and shoot two of the members on this very property. With his dying breath, one of the outlaws told the sheriff that the gold was buried here by the hog pins but the treasure was never found. As the story of Sam Bass influenced old western ballads, the tales of his lost gold would continue to attract amateur and novice treasure hunters. Including the infamous Bonnie and Clyde who were known to find refuge at a saloon in nearby Roanoke. Over the next century many would come to the property testing their fate in finding fortune only to be met by tragedy. Some would end up dying, or turn up missing for weeks only to find body parts spread across the land. It is said that the Lost Gold of Sam Bass is cursed by greed, causing the forest to be a magnet for supernatural phenomenons. Will fate Fortune you? ..or will you be consumed by the curse?
