127 years ago, the world survived a catastrophic ice age known as the Whiteout and is now going through the aftermath of this global crisis, which blanketed lands with water and reduced the human population by large numbers. Nations now live on giant arks known as Dreadnought, which are able to sustain ecosystem and life on a smaller scale. Only a small percentage of land remains and every 20 years, candidates will be picked at random to be transported to this land to live out their remaining lives. Being the chosen ones selected this time, you and the rest board the transport vessel with glimmering excitement to finally see land for the first time. Difficulty level: 6/10 Success Rate: 35%

4 escape rooms

The room was unique in that there are superpowers that you can choose (for two players it is three and for three players and onwards it is matching # of players) and you can sacrifice their abilities to receive hints. More hints than the number of superpowers you give up, you cannot be on the leaderboard. That aspect of it was interesting. The hints are automatically generated so there is not much that the GM has to do in order to run the games. However, I think that the hint system is better done if you can ask questions specific to the puzzle. I found it frustrating for us to get a hint about something we already knew, so we did not feel that the hints were helpful. There is also one superpower that allows you to solve the entire puzzle and we used it because it was time consuming but also felt that the superpowers then carry you to the answer rather than letting you play. I just hate linear rooms with a passion. There is not much for players to do. The translation aspect of it was very nice. I think one part involves actual korean but you could do it without knowing the language. I think for the cost especially, not a bad escape room but nothing to make a special trip out for.

Gameplay

Linear style play which is my least favorite type of play; I think it had a good mix of different sorts of puzzles.some of the instructions for the puzzle were not clear - they give you this long story to read and it is not relevant to the puzzle at all, which was a bit frustrating.

Atmosphere

It felt like an older room. They tried to do what they can with the limited space. I do think their props are confusing because they are there as distractors.

Customer service

The GM runs like four rooms by herself and she did great.

Minimum age

12

They were not super difficult puzzles, but one of them, i think is too high for children under 12 to reach unless there's many of them.

‘Dreadnought’’s strength is how accessible it is for an English audience. This is one of the few games in Seoul that is truly English-friendly for foreigners that cannot speak Korean. While one puzzle does have Korean characters in it, that specific puzzle lands more as an observation puzzle and doesn’t impede gameplay. The use of player “powers” was interesting, and it was pleasing to see that Breakout allows “extra help” (unlimited hints) now, which will still allow players to experience the entire game. The staff did well to explain and recommend powers based on the room. Overall, ‘Dreadnought’ feels like an older escape room where the puzzles feel like themed puzzles, rather than an immersive experience with elements of diegesis throughout. The main point of interest is ‘Dreadnought’’s unique theme and slight narrative, which are impeded by its delivery within large blocks of text. Another element of note is a particularly difficult puzzle that almost certainly requires outside knowledge—something that isn’t expected by today’s standards. We read the explanation afterwards and still didn’t understand the answer. Make sure you get the “Lockmaster” power to receive the answer for that one.

Gameplay

It was relatively easy to figure out which puzzle was next, but cluing and flow could be improved to bolster player enjoyment. Some puzzle pieces were given immediately, despite belonging to puzzles at the end of the sequence.

Atmosphere

‘Dreadnought’ had a collection of ship-themed rooms with some print outs stuck onto the props to complete the decor instead of authentic ship set pieces. That being said, they built some interesting elements into their rooms to make each room varied and different.

Customer service

Staff were very kind and helpful, particularly with explaining the player roles the group could choose from.

Story

The narrative was interesting and different to most escape room experiences, but the integration of the narrative was almost exclusively via blocks of texts or page-long letters.

One of my favorite rooms! I really clicked with this one. The story was cool and set design was magnificent!! Puzzles were really intuitive and easy to understand. Loved the ‘superpowers’ you get too! Absolutely do this room if you’re in Seoul.
