Following on from the events of our "Bloodline" game, Breathtaker continues the saga and plunges you straight back into the action. A mysterious pharmaceutical company in Preston, Melbourne, is inviting small tour groups to explore their high-tech facility. They claim a "breakthrough in biomedical science that will revolutionise humanities future lies in wait" for all those who reply to their cryptic invitations. The operation is extremely secretive, and to enter, you have to sign a non-disclosure agreement and a comprehensive waiver form. The thing is, none who have entered on these tours have ever been seen again. Something is wrong. It's time we infiltrate one of these tour groups to see for ourselves.

A couple months later, I’m still in two minds about this game. The opening story beats and prompts were pretty well done. The guided tour aspect was great for world building and helped advance the story quickly. The staff were really great and worked hard to keep the energy up the whole 2 hours. The space itself truly is very large. Pretty extensive amount of rooms and some good use of the levels built into the space. It felt like where this room shone the most is when we were given the agency to explore the space and come back together with our findings. These liberties are unfortunately few and far between with a good portion of the game spent standing in a modestly dressed room listening to narrative exposition monologued at you. Just when you think you’re splitting up and maybe getting into some puzzling something brings you almost immediately back to the same room for some more standing and monologuing. The set design is pretty sparse with most spaces just a vague office vibe. I imagine this is to do with the scare factor of it all (not wanting things knocked over/broken etc) but still think it could be designed far better. Not a heap of puzzles which for a 2+ hour game feels a bit insane especially at a high price point. I understand you’re paying for the live actor experience as well but I want puzzles man. Some moments where traversing the space in the dark with stairs and other level changes felt pretty dangerous. A game I enjoyed mostly due to sharing it with a lot of my escaping pals but definitely some room for adjustments.

Certainly an overall great experience. The best part of this is just how immersive it is, 5+ actors that you actively talk to and work alongside in some cases. The main downside would honestly be the amount of people required, not for inconvenience but due to the fact it takes away from the horror. This would easily be one of the scarier rooms if you could go with less people
