Escape room

An awesome enough room that has warranted me to write a review in order to let people know why it’s awesome. This immersive experience is quick in letting you know that the story and the role you play in the story is important to your enjoyment. However, that does not mean that the puzzles take a back seat. What I really appreciated about this place was the careful design of very naturally making you feel that you aren’t problem/puzzle solving because you paid money to be in a room for around an hour, but because you are trying to actually figure out how to save the people you’ve been set out to save as well as yourselves. That is to say, the signposting for where you need to go is so well interwoven that you always feel like you have a place to interact with within the setting to make progress. This doesn’t mean that for people who enjoy a challenge, this is just a room that lightly guides you around a playground of interactivity with no tension or difficulty. It still has a great dose of challenge and the use of technology is used smartly. You quickly start to realise the problems of the space ship you find yourself in and from that point on, you’re always kept busy tinkering with different parts of the setting to make sure that progressing at a reasonable pace. There wasn’t a point in time where it seemed frustrating as there was always something that felt as though you were being nudged in the right direction, without handing you solutions on a silver platter. The quality of the puzzles themselves if to describe in one word would be: fun. It was just so fun to have a ‘play’ in this environment that really made you feel you were in a futuristic sci-fi spaceship with problems that felt fitting to your dilemma. Without spoiling anything, it really does feel like you have to creatively think your way out of the problems that appear before you throughout your time. Overall, this is one of the best immersive experiences in Melbourne right now. It is quite new, but they have clearly taken their experience and the growth of ‘escape rooms’ into account in their design of this room to be transformative, rather than iterative of the generic puzzle solving experience that we are so used to in Australia already. Experiences like these are how from this point on how escape rooms need to evolve into.
