Cabin of the Cackling Man
POP-UP Escape Rooms
Escape room
Pop up
I actually had low expectations for this room because it was a non-private pop-up escape room. But surprisingly, I had a great time! Yes, even with the other group of 6 with us. The cabin room revolves around a haunted video game. The NES video game is wholly original, designed from the ground up for this room, and plays like a mix of Legend of Zelda, Secret of Mana, and Dragon Quest. A bit clunky, but very impressive considering the entire room is based on multiple puzzles that connect the video game world and the cabin itself. The story is told through discovered videos and actually plays a huge part in the game itself. The ending makes it all worthwhile. Despite not having huge production values and being a public room in the center of a loud anime convention, I had a great experience with Cabin of the Cackling Man! It’s a good choice for the anime/gaming community. We even got the hall of fame record!

The Last Masquerade is a mobile pop-up escape room. As something that has to be set up in a more communal setting, it was surprisingly well-put together and fun! The puzzles were mostly riddle-driven, but the solutions were innovative and made the most out of the setting and props. It actually felt immersive despite being a puzzle room set up in a more public area. There were some technical difficulties, unfortunately, but they were addressed. There is a live game master in the room, but they’re not dressed up or anything. They just watch over and make sure things work while providing hints as requested. Another interesting aspect is that they call their escape rooms LAIRs, or Live Adventure Interactive Rooms. As such, they provide alternate endings depending on your progress. As our group escaped, I think we got the good ending! Overall, surprisingly fun for what it’s advertised to be, a literal escape room that has popped up! It’s actually expensive to get hire the escape room, but if you’re an attendee of an event and can buy a ticket to the room, it’s quite cheap!

I played this mobile pop-up escape room at an anime convention in Milwaukee. I had done another pop up (Masquerade) from this same company so I thought I came in knowing what to expect. But I underestimated how bad a 10-stranger public group in a very cramped low-ceiling space would be. Also, it’s super dark with only a few lights that keep turning off randomly (possibly by accident)? I unfortunately didn’t see most of the non-linear puzzles because of the chaotic 10 strangers plus the GM wandering about giving unsolicited hints. There are some interesting uses of sound and movies to give a creepy factor. I also liked that this room was at least anime-adjacent, and had to do with Japanese ghosts (Yurei) and a Japanese horror Ringu movie-like plot. There are some stinker puzzles (please don’t make us put things in our mouth in a public popup escape room). There was a moment that was sort of suspenseful, but then it was sort of disappointing. Would I have had more fun with less people? Probably, but it was impossible due to how the event worked. It’s always full capacity for every single room, and I guess that’s just the way it has to be for them to make their money back.
