The scope of Project MKUltra was research undertaken by unaware volunteers at 80 institutions, including colleges and universities, hospitals and prisons. The CIA operated through these institutions, MKUltra used numerous methods to manipulate people's mental states and alter brain functions, including administration of drugs, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, isolation, and other forms of torture.
