"SKATE INTO THE 90'S" It’s homecoming week during your senior year and you and the rest of the class of ’98 have been having a total blast! You’re capping off your week of fun with a trip to the local skating rink before the big game. The music is blaring, the party is jumping, and everyone can tell this will be a night to remember. *record-scratch* All of the sudden, the lights go out, and you hear a commotion by the door. You see some goons from the rival high school have chained it closed and locked you in! Totally not cool. If that weren’t bad enough, they’ve spray painted “Bulldogs Rule and Tigers Drool” across the door. As if! Can you find a way to escape and prove that you’re all that and a bag of chips, or will you spend the rest of your senior year totally buggin'?

305 escape rooms

Rating: 4/5 - A lot of fun, especially if you love nostalgia Pros: ➕The vibe of the set felt just right for a skating rink, they decorated it floor to ceiling and it felt spacious. ➕ Puzzles were fun, varied, and fit the 90s theme, there were lots of props. ➕ Loved the optional physical challenge, I've never done or seen that activity in an escape room before. ➕Tons of nostalgia for millennials ➕Good use of audio ➕A nice amount of tech, with some padlocks mixed in. ➕GM was helpful when needed Room for improvement: ➖One puzzle felt particularly unintuitive. Even with the solution, I wasn't sure how it was supposed to be solved until the GM explained at the end. ➖Some parts of the set looked a bit sparse, it would be nice if they added more detail. ➖It's mostly just a single room game, you don't get to discover new areas, though it's a fairly large space. I played this solo (paid for 2 tickets) and finished with time to spare but I got nudges/hints from the GM. I would recommend 2-4 players. My ranking of Memphis Escape rooms I've played starting with my favorite: 1. Jurassic Project 2. Monsters from the Abyss 3. Shipwreck Cove 4. One Night in the 90s

104 escape rooms

Another outstanding set design by Memphis Escape Rooms. However, there were a couple of puzzles that, although we determined how to solve them, we just couldn't see what we were supposed to see, which slowed us down significantly (and added a level of frustration). Overall, a good room and if you've played any other MER you'll see this is worth playing.

Gameplay

From experience, we were in a 1990's rollerskating rink complete with skate floor, concessions, video games, and storage lockers. Wow! The room seemed relatively linear but we found ourselves wondering what to do next with what we had. There were also two puzzles that didn't give us what we needed (one was ambiguous and for the second we just weren't given what we needed). The multiple stops were frustrating, but overall the room was good.

Atmosphere

Outstanding! We were in a rollerskating rink in the 90's. Every part was immersive and some of the throw-back items were very entertaining.

Customer service

The staff was not as enthusiastic as we've seen them in the past, possibly due to a full schedule on all of the rooms on a Saturday. We did not receive a code that our host was supposed to give us directly toward the beginning, although we solved the puzzle and looked for it in the right place. We think, at times, that our GM was limited by a pre-canned clue system that gave us information that we already had until the set of clues worked itself toward something that we needed. When we explained the deficiency in the code that none of us adequately received we were told that it was our fault for getting rid of it (all three of us). It was either there or it wasn't...and it wasn't (x3). Overall, she was helpful but we could have been better in synch.

Particularly interesting or different

Yes

Excellent set design alone made it interesting. We did a similarly themed game in Little Rock a couple of years ago, and One Night in the 90s blew that one away!

Story

Very good. The puzzles took different parts from the roller rink experience. A lot of fun.

Difficulty

Medium

The puzzles, for the most part, were relatively straightforward. However, some of the information we were given was ambiguous (e.g. [not related] is that the shape of an elephant or a stain that just looks like an elephant?) or missing (none of us adequately received the personalized code we were supposed to receive toward the beginning). Otherwise, had we had the missing parts this room would have been on the harder side of medium.

Game tech

Mechanical

Mostly mechanical but some great tech added. Outstanding design overall.

Ideal number of players

4

We played with three but, although there aren't too many items in the room, it is large enough that we could have used a fourth player. We missed some "hiding in plain sight" clues because of the room's size.

Scary

Not scary

Minimum age

8

There are no thematic issues related to age, but the challenge of a couple of puzzles makes the minimum around 8.

Was anything broken?

Yes

Not broken, but one item was left out on the floor. We used it to solve half of a puzzle but had to wait until near the end to solve the other half which added some confusion. A second personalized item was supposed to be given to us near the beginning but it didn't work the way it was supposed to. We were told it was our fault that that item didn't work the way it was intended. Was it...?

Live actors

No

Physically active

Somewhat

A good sized space with the requirement to move around a lot on one puzzle.

Accessibility

Easily accessible. Wide open in most places. One clue may have been a little challenging to get to and there are a couple of stairs to one section of puzzles. Some puzzles requiring reaching up. The room gets a little dark at one point.

Easy to find location

Yes

Parking

Easy

Dedicated parking outside the building.

Safety

Yes

Be advised, just like every roller skating rink I've ever been to, the benches in the middle of the floor are covered in the same material as the carpet and blend in VERY WELL with the carpet, especially when you're wandering around and looking at other items in the room and not paying attention to where you're walking. You'd think I'd only have to add this warning once, but from experience and one fall, with a second almost fall, I recommend keeping this in mind;-)

Loved this room! This was my parents first time doing an escape room, and it was pretty difficult for them, but overall was a great room. Definitely one of my favorites in theme!

If you're from the 90s this is a really cool room, it has some really unique puzzles and it all flows very well. There was 1 puzzle which really didn't make sense based on common logic but I will let it slide as the rest of it is just very fun and unique.

Set design was excellent; however, this was not our favorite room. There wasn't really a story to follow, and the room just didn't flow well for us. At times, it was difficult to discern a definite answer, as there appeared to he multiple potential options. We had to make assumptions a few times. We did not at all have the capability of solving one puzzle, as the information delivery was not successful, and we just had to wait for the answer to be given to us. While we still had fun, we much prefer others with this group. The kids loved the optional aspect of the room and mostly just spent the remainder of the escape time doing this, while the adults completed the rest of the room.

Gameplay

One puzzle just did not work, and flow wasn't great. Very immersive, though, and some novel puzzles.

First of all the set was perfect! Literally felt like I was in a 90s skate rink. Some puzzles were super fun and we loved others were clunky. One we couldn't tell if we got it so we started the sequence again.

Thank you! We’re so glad you loved the set—it’s great to hear it gave you that true ‘90s skate rink feel! We appreciate your feedback on the puzzles and will take it into account.

Such a fun theme! Perfect game for larger groups due to room size and puzzle flow. One puzzle had us stumped for awhile, but we still escaped without any help!

The room was fun to go back to the 90s. However, the story didn’t have much to do with the game play. A few of the puzzles were confusing to understand and after the clue was given, I was still stumped on how we were supposed to figure that out on our own. Also, roller skates are optional during one point. Unfortunately, I was given the wrong size skates that I asked for.

Compared to some of Memphis Escape Rooms’ other rooms, this one is alright. The set design is beautiful, we actually felt like we were in a skate rink. However, some of the puzzles felt like a bit of a stretch. We got stuck several times because we didn’t know how to get started, both at the beginning of the game and whenever a path ended. A couple times, I felt like “how would the average person think of that,” but it could very likely just be me being oblivious. Overall, I’d say this room was very immersive and fun, but the puzzles were alright.
