It's 2035 and the metaverse has invaded society with new virtual experiences. This has led to a dramatic increase in crimes committed in this new environment. Metacriminals have therefore invaded the prison system and the situation is now out of control. It has become necessary to ease the pressure in the prisons and to fill the labor shortage which has become worse than ever. The government has therefore launched a new project called R.E.S.E.T. (Rehabilitation, education and self-awareness of errors through technology). This project could allow some metacriminals to obtain their release if they can demonstrate that they are able to learn from their errors or mistakes. You, as metacriminals, have been chosen for this project. This is a unique chance for you to regain your freedom.

Immersia’s most distinctive game and one of the most unusual and memorable experiences of our Canada trip! The set isn’t big but the decor and live actor do a great job of exuding a futuristic virtual reality vibe. The game stands out for its bold and innovative concept and design, which could be polarising and frustrating for players. We were admittedly a little confused and disoriented at first but quickly settled into a groove and found the puzzles and flow a delight, with the nostalgic final puzzle being one of my personal favourites!

The build and idea behind Project R.E.S.E.T is inventive, but you may either love or hate the gameplay. The cost of a novel experience was having less puzzles in the room with a linear design, which is necessary to escape within the time limit. While I’m glad I got to experience it, this style doesn’t work for me because I enjoy solving lots of puzzles, and the linear setup is not conducive to a group larger than 2. Project R.E.S.E.T was also the most high-tech of the rooms we played at Immersia, and their use of technology was cool. After a slightly aggressive beginning, the actor in the room was fun and also chatted with us after about the novel gameplay.

Gameplay

It was definitely novel!

It’s hard to write a spoiler-free, fair review of Project R.E.S.E.T. because you’ll either love the mechanic that drives the game or hate it. I’m of the latter camp, so this ended up being my least favourite game at Immersia. I can still appreciate the genius of the idea and especially the execution of it, and our GM was great as the in-room character. The set is pretty IKEA, so less spectacular in many ways than the other rooms at this location (until it is spectacular for another reason!). Due to the mechanic, the puzzles have to be on the simple side, so the inclusion of two process-y/time sink puzzles wasn’t the best for a team of two (again because of the particular mechanic!) If you are very patient and/or enjoy a certain type of video games, you might adore this game - it’s just not for everyone. The title is brilliant :)

I have a bit of mixed feelings about this room. I liked it and I would recommend it probably, but the puzzles felt a bit simple and easy and at the start it felt a bit repetitive (it is supposed to be) before we actually felt like we were making progress.

From a tech, set design and execution standpoint, the room was great. But the theme itself was an abstract excuse to have us do arbitrary tasks. We were ostensibly being monitored to see if we, as people who committed crimes in the metaverse, could be readmitted to society, but almost none of the tasks put in front of us were thematically linked to that storyline. Consequently I didn't think the room delivered on its promise. The gimmick where if you make a mistake you have to start over might sound good on paper, but in practice it's not fun to repeat tasks you've already finished, and it just felt like a time killer. Is it slick and polished? Yes, absolutely. But the in-game experience and the theme do not serve each other, and as a result it all feels a little sterile and generic.

Gameplay

With the exception of the restart mechanic, which was amusing the first time but an annoyance thereafter, the gameplay was smooth, albeit mostly linear. All of the rooms at Immersia lean a little too hard on telling the player what to do, rather than pointing the player in the right direction and letting them figure things out. In this case, that manifests with the tablet you're given, which at times provides clues that should instead be in the environment itself.

Atmosphere

The set design was great. All the tech worked (although there's a key interface where its ability to scroll was not obvious).

Set design and actor absolutely executed the theme well! Such a unique idea from most other rooms, but make sure you go with the right group or it can get quite frustrating

Puzzles 🧩: 9/10 Set/Wow Factor ✨: 9/10 Story/Immersion 🔮: 10/10 Fun factor 🤘: 9/10 We loved this room! We gave it top scores for puzzles, set/wow factor, immersion and fun. No notes? High tech and a nice variety of puzzles. We think it's a must-play if you're in the region. A more traditional escape room with a tech/futuristic theme and classic in the region. Highly recommend.

We were 2 adults and 2 tween girls (less than 20 rooms done). It's a linear story, which was perfect for us! Really original theme, beautiful decor. Highly recommend!
