In The Big Heist, you step into the Minister of Justice’s office with a rather unusual mission: the stolen tiara of Empress Dagmar must be found and returned to the National Museum before the minister returns from his lunch break. You have 60 minutes to find the tiara while the Minister of Justice is out for lunch. You can definitely feel the connection to the classic Olsen Gang stories, which gives the room a cosy and entertaining atmosphere. The room is no longer directly part of the Olsen Gang universe, however, so you don’t need to have seen the films to enjoy the experience. Instead, you take on the role of journalists investigating the theft of Empress Dagmar’s tiara. All the clues point towards none other than the Minister of Justice himself as the thief – and, rather conveniently, the police don’t seem particularly willing to do much without direct evidence. The room has a fairly linear structure, but there is a good variety of puzzles. Several different types of tasks need to be solved along the way, which means that the group gets to work on different things rather than simply repeating the same type of puzzle. Cooperation is also important, and the room makes good use of the available space in relation to the puzzles. We played the room as a group of four, and there was enough space for everyone to stay active throughout the game. This is a clear advantage, as it can otherwise quickly become a situation where one or two players are simply standing around waiting for the others to finish a puzzle. There were a few puzzles where we had to stand quite close together for everyone to participate in solving them, but overall, the room worked well with the group splitting up and working on different things. The office itself is nicely designed, which helps build the illusion that you are actually in the Minister of Justice’s office. There is also no excessive use of padlocks, which can otherwise be a clear indication that you have stepped into an escape room. There were, however, a few places where the illusion was slightly broken. Some elements from previous versions of the room were still present, even though they were no longer part of the game because they had broken. This led to a few situations where we thought something was supposed to be used, even though that was no longer the case. It doesn’t ruin the experience, but it does take away slightly from the overall impression. Overall, The Big Heist is a cosy and varied escape room with an emphasis on cooperation and different types of puzzles. It works well both for experienced escape room players and for those who are newer to the genre. Its location in Nyhavn also makes it easy to combine the game with a trip into the city afterwards.
