Centuries ago, a rumor spread about the Yokai Izakaya that was surrounded by evil spirits which guarded its fabled backyard. People claimed to see a monk continually circling the area, who never seemed to age. After hearing this myth, you and your ghost hunting team decided to investigate the haunted izakaya, but your colleague Dahlia went missing during her investigation just a few days before your arrival. Now, you are in a rush to find her. Just then, you received a text message from Dahlia, saying "Help me..." At the same time a disembodied voice approaches you, "There is no backyard here! Stay away..." You and your team have 60 minutes to discover the secrets of this haunted izakaya and rescue your colleague before it's all too late..

This was our first time playing a room at Mystic Escape and they certainly did not disappoint! As one of the newer escape rooms in Brisbane, stakes are always high but Yokai Izakaya really surpassed our expectations as an incredibly creative and unique concept. Drawing inspiration from Japanese izakaya culture with supernatural elements, the storyline was intriguing and developed throughout. The puzzles themselves we found to be quite straightforward, and our host was extremely helpful and friendly before and during the game. Even though some of them require translating Japanese, the room was still very enjoyable for the native Japanese speaker in our group. We will definitely be back to play the other two rooms - thank you Mystic Escape!

I loved it. Our host was awesome. Super friendly. I really appreciated the explanations of the room after we escaped. You could tell there was a lot of thought put into the puzzles and the story flow of the room. The details of the puzzles were great. It was really cool how almost everything meant something. It was great that I played with really smart and sharp friends.

A spooky room with a delightful Japanese restaurant theme, the game slowly introduces the supernatural elements whilst offering up a run of enjoyable thematic puzzles along the way. ‘Yokai Izakaya’ stands out with its unique use of Japanese. Rather than deciphering symbols or ciphers, the game leans into its theming and enables players to translate Japanese hiragana and kanji. Without giving anything specific away, the choices players make in the game have some impact on the ending and it’s exciting to see escape rooms exploring player agency.
Game flowed well! One puzzle may have been tricky to solve, but I fortunately knew enough Japanese to not struggle with finding an alternative way to decipher. The way to solve it was definitely there, but when explained after the game, I could see how it would be difficult to connect those dots.
Theming and aesthetics were fun!
GM was kind and responsive.
