Simon had always been drawn to the serenity of his family's farm with his grandfather, however, there was one persistent nightmare that plagued his sleep, night after night. In the dream, Simon found himself standing before the cabin's weathered door, bathed in an eerie moonlight. He would reach for the handle, only to find it locked, trapping him outside in the cold darkness. As he pounded on the door, pleading for entry, he could hear a faint, haunting whisper from within, echoing the name "Simon." The nightmare was always the same, yet its grip on his mind was relentless.

From the get go I had a couple issues with this one, beginning with a distinct lack of content warning surrounding suicidal themes present in the room. I thought there were some decent puzzles but most didn't feel super intuitive and we had to have multiple puzzles explained afterwards. The story was where they really lost me however. It was explained that we need to pay attention to the story throughout but try as we may it was near on unintelligible. Even after having it explained I still couldn't keep up, not ideal when it's necessary for puzzle solving. Other than that there were some issues with tech not working and some broken mechanisms that detracted from the flow and overall experience of the game. A pretty baffling room from my end and not an experience I can say I enjoyed.

A really bizarre experience over at Doctor Q, my friends and I opted for their Nightmare room based on the generally positive reviews. The main talking point was the story which jumped around so sporadically it was pretty much impossible to keep up. Our GM did his best post-game to walk us through each story beat but it wasn’t really clicking. Set design and atmosphere are good fun with a spacious (albeit ongoing) layout that encouraged exploration. The quality and logic of certain puzzles were a bit iffy but we powered through nonetheless. It was far from my favourite escape room but I also think this is not Doctor Q’s main attraction. From what I understand it’s probably worth buying into Haunted or The Lost Tomb for a more well thought out, immersive experience.
