Athens is globally renowned as a mecca for highly immersive horror experiences featuring live actors. It is all the more remarkable, then, when a room climbs the international leaderboards without relying on shock tactics or jump scares. Yet, that is exactly what "The Maid" by VANSA Escape Room 3 has achieved. Winner of the prestigious TERPECA Award (among others), the room breaks with the prevailing Athenian horror tradition. The backstory instantly draws you in: you abandon your studies abroad and rush back to London. Your father, Jacob Ecrest—an eccentric, fabulously wealthy art collector—has vanished without a trace. Upon arriving at the magnificent family seat, the Ecrest Estate, you are greeted by Frida ("The Maid"), the loyal but utterly distraught housekeeper. From the moment you step inside, it is evident that the experience was crafted with a massive production budget and meticulous attention to detail. The estate feels completely authentic; the set design, lighting, and sound design combine to create the perfect atmosphere of a classic British manor steeped in secrets. The sheer scale of the premises is particularly impressive, offering a vast number of rooms and hidden corners to explore. The progression feels cinematic, as you peel back the layers of your father's secrets one by one. By Athenian standards—where non-horror rooms can sometimes suffer from visual neglect—"The Maid" sets a whole new benchmark for polish and immersion. If you love puzzles, this room is absolute heaven. The task structure is incredibly organic, with one puzzle leading logically to the next. The design guides the team so skillfully that, despite the complexity, you can navigate the game with almost no external hints from the Game Master. "The Maid" is an absolute must-play in Athens—especially for teams looking for a break from the city's ubiquitous horror-themed rooms, or simply those with no desire for jump scares and physical contact with actors.

Really nice traditional puzzle room and a nice break from the haunted houses at every other escape place. One thing holding back this game is the cluing/signposting. One example: we got stuck on a puzzle because a certain colored light was directed to two things and we spent 8 minutes trying to solve the wrong thing - ultimately this is a rare occasion I wouldve preferred an earlier nudge. For what these puzzles were (mostly standard puzzles), this also felt overlong. This is a 90-minute escape room that for some reason they made into a 150-minute escape room. Ultimately, decent puzzles with a few quite good ones - but is it worth the opportunity cost?

We really enjoyed this room, it's very immersive and there are lots of rooms to explore. What I wish we knew going in is that you should expect to need a fair amount of hints and clues from the game master. We were initially kind of frustrated because we are used to needing very minimal hints but quickly realized that we definitely needed help with the flow of some puzzles which were either not explicitly linked or very subtly linked. We only do non-horror rooms so this was a solid option for us in Athens.

Game 10 of 17 of Our Athens Tour - This one is interesting for me, because I think it’s placement as coming after Paradox hurt it a little in my eyes. The game is EXCELLENT, very beautiful with perfect scenery and a good, if somewhat predictable story. The puzzles were variable for me. They were all well crafted, but some were so easy they felt more like time wasting activities than true puzzles. This is intentional by Vansa, as they want this to be a long puzzle game approachable for all (which they absolutely pull off well), but it leaves the game really wanting something that feels truly unique or truly layered compared to the games we played at Paradox Project immediately before it. I would recommend this game either early on a tour, or to less experienced players looking for a meatier than usual puzzle game. It was great by global standards, and just good compared to the rest of the market here in Athens.

The Maid by Vansa Escape Rooms was the 1st room of Day 3 and the 5th game of our Athens Escape Tour 2026, played with the same team of five. This was the second puzzle focused room out of the three puzzle games we planned for this tour, and it delivered two and a half hours of pure puzzling fun. The decor and overall environment were of very high quality, immediately placing you in the atmosphere of a mansion filled with art and secrets. The setting felt elegant and cohesive, helping the story unfold naturally as you progressed deeper into the experience. The story was introduced and developed in a very pleasant way, which helped slow the pace slightly between puzzle sequences and gave the experience a nice rhythm. A particularly thoughtful touch was a small area inside the game with water and sweets available for the team, something that feels very welcoming during such a long experience. What truly defines this room is the sheer amount of puzzles, 30+. It’s a massive challenge. Even with a very experienced team, we only finished two minutes over the official time, so the time pressure is definitely real. For teams with less experience, it will likely feel even tighter. The game keeps building momentum as you progress, constantly pushing you deeper into the story through the puzzles. Despite lasting two and a half hours, the time flew by without us noticing. Highly recommended for experienced players. Newer players can still enjoy it, but it’s best to have at least one or two people in the team with escape room experience to fully appreciate the challenge.

We liked this room and I lot! It is the closest rooms we found to the paradox project ones. All be it simpler and smaller version. The riddles were nice rhe story had a nice flow and the atmosphere captures our imagination. The sound could be a bit lower at some times.

We didn’t originally have this game on our itinerary, but we had a cancellation and they were able to create a slot for us in order to play. This was SUCH a great puzzle room. Strong environments and room reveals. This is not a scary game!! The best art heist style game we have played to date and great break from scary experiences in Athens.
