An assignment awaits you in Amsterdam. You must break into the famous Bachmann Gallery and steal a mysterious painting. Before you can do this, you must scour Amsterdam’s underworld for a team capable of carrying out such an operation. You will also scout out the gallery, inspect building plans, hack security systems, and plan your theft. Every decision you make affects how the story develops. In addition to the high-fidelity game materials, the use of real online maps, emails, and websites draws you deep into the story. Can you pull off the million-dollar heist of the century?
444 escape rooms
I have enjoyed other games in the Masters of Crime series, which usually involve choose-your-own-adventure murder mysteries with some escape room style puzzles. The Shadows one is unique because instead of solving a murder, you are planning a heist. It’s the act of building a party and concocting a scheme part, similar to what you might see in the first half of movies like Ocean’s Eleven. By visiting different areas and making choices about your plan, you end up putting cards into a “heist deck.” At the end of the game, you get to see how your heist plays out. It’s fun to solve thematically relevant puzzles, sneak around, and decide who will be a part on your team. It’s also interesting to see the heist play out, but I wish there was more agency to the heist itself once it’s started. It feels like if you were in a heist escape room, but on autoplay. That said, the few heist puzzles there were really fun especially in a group. I think the murder mysteries in this series are better, but I admire the ambition of Shadows! It lets you play out your inner thief!
