The St. Onge Case was my least favorite room at Immersia. Before we entered, we were told that this room is a sequel to a room at their other location, though the summary they give you is sufficient background information. The overall case was the highlight of the room, and I liked where the story went and how it integrated with the puzzles. Regarding scare factor, this room has more creepy / true crime vibes than jump scares. While the room contained some inventive puzzles, it became too linear after the first location change. Space became under-utilized in the second half, and there were a ton of red herrings. I felt myself not being able to contribute, since there was only one thing to do at a time. One small complaint was that one of their puzzles was broken, but they missed the first time we solved it (they just trigger it once they hear you understood the puzzle). Since the room is linear, this held us up a bit because we thought we didn’t have the right information. The second half of this room is driven by the story, and while that immersive experience works for some people, it decreased the amount of puzzles available, and made the room less fun for me.

Gameplay

There were novel puzzles, and it flowed well in the beginning. It started to stagnate toward the end, which made it less fun.

I didn't have a chance to play the pt. 1 of this story but I had a good amount of fun and the different changes of environment within the room were great and delivered the right mix of emotions. We definitely had fun and it was definitely very engaging.

We did not do Weekend at the Shack, so we came into the story without any foreknowledge. A story catchup is baked into one of the first puzzles, which I thought was a smart piece of game design. The idea that a police warehouse was built atop a killer's murder shack for the past 10 years is ludicrous, but serves to allow you to transition between environments so you just have to go with it. The set design of the shack is terrific. We've played a few rooms with similar tropes, and this was probably the creepiest. I didn't love the puzzles in the second floor of the shack-- I found the rationale for them vague and confusing, and each was finicky to solve. At the climax of the game, the killer tells you exactly what to do. He basically says "I'm going to do A ,when I do, you do B, get C, and put it at D." That was extremely disappointing and un-fun. It was like the game was just exhausted at that point and wanted to be done. The game started strong, but finished weak.

Gameplay

Everything was fine until we went upstairs, and then the flow kind of fell apart.

Story

The story was kind of a mess. Instead of killing the murderer, our friend just wants to take away the ashes of his dead family? The hacked code he gives us is wrong for undisclosed reasons. Who are these other murder victims, and why did the killer murder them? Was he doing this before his family died, or was this a result of that trauma? As players we have no agency to reach a positive end to the story. The narrative here was murky and didn't connect for me beyond "bad guy is bad."

If you can, definitely play Weekend at the Shack 1 at the other location first. We did 1 the morning of, and then this game, aka Weekend at the Shack 2 in the afternoon. It was a great addition and then closure to the story line. This room kept us moving and kept us guessing what was going to happen next.

An excellent room, both in terms of the story and the decor! Very immersive—we were on edge the whole time! We played this room with four players, and we all loved the experience. Out of the four of us, I was the only one who had played the “Weekend at the Cabin” scenario, which turns out to be the one that precedes this one. Whether or not we’d played the previous story didn’t affect the game at all. Seriously, this room set the bar really high! Very well done!
