Breakout Waikiki
Escape room
IRL
We did two other rooms that we really loved, so much that we did a third. We actually set time records on both of the other rooms and we were looking forward to this one, but sadly this room was boring, tedious, and nearly completely incoherent. The room generally suffered some of the same issues as the other rooms in this location, but dialed up severalfold. There are SO MANY four-digit locks and keypads, all of which have no discerning features or ways to identify them, so if you do this room, get ready to enter each and every code you solve five to ten times into different keypads and locks. The only indicator to if you have the correct code in the right lock is whether or not it clicks open. This room suffered TWO things that are old escape room tropes, each of which can singlehandedly ruin a room: (1) reliance on a large book, and (2) tedious translation tasks. This room requires page flipping over and over to solve basic puzzles. And the other puzzles require going to Russian translation charts (which don't make any sense, by the way), tediously converting letters from one "language" to another. Any room that requires multiple long tedious "solves" by looking at charts and flipping pages is an instant thumbs down in my book. And this room had translation and page-flipping galore. All in all, this game felt less like a fun paid puzzle-solving experience, and more like a minimum wage data-entry job. The bad room cliche of offering tasks instead of puzzles is the defining feature of this room. 3/10, would strongly recommend against playing this one.

Overall a basic, good room. Some of the puzzles were a tad confusing, and there are a lot of four digit codes… a few of these codes do absolutely, which was frustrating.

A super cute room that is mostly linear with a couple nonlinear elements. Set a record time with a group of 2!

Good and fun generic room. Nothing particular special.

Be warned: this is a giant video game and not an escape room. And a very mediocre video game at that. Had high hopes after doing a very good different game at this location. Some of the physical elements of leading up to the video game were not functioning properly. The plot of the game was entirely incoherent. The video game portion itself was quite terrible. The perspective of the game doesn’t make physical or geometric sense. The actual ship is incredibly slow, and takes FOREVER to “upgrade”. The ascend and descend controls do virtually nothing. None of the areas are logically laid out, leading to a frustrating feeling of piloting a “ship” designed so imcompetently that it almost feels built specifically to frustrate. The worst feeling is that 90% of the work in the video game itself doesn’t matter — due to poor design you can ignore all the instructions and just skip to the end. You might be able to have fun in this one. But if you’ve ever either played a half-decent video game or played a truly good escape room, then you’ll most likely be disappointed.

A truly great room with an annoying broken puzzle. Should have been a “heart”. Unfortunately one game element was broken, and we tried to communicate with the game master that it was broken. But the game master continued to insist that we were just misinterpreting the clue. After 10 minutes of back and forth, they finally agreed that it was broken and gave us guidance. With only two people and ten minutes wasted on the broken puzzle, we were then forced to rush through to finish on time. No apology or extension, which was frustrating when we are used to finishing with time to spare. We still finished with around 10 minutes left, but some humility and attention from the staff would’ve made all the difference.

The atmosphere was nice but most of the puzzles felt worn and disjointed. Nothing really flowed well. It was actually a little jarring to have such a beautiful room have such poorly thought out and janky puzzles. Most rooms this low quality look much, much worse. Some puzzles were not puzzles at all (you just folllow instruction), some puzzles dragged on wayyyy too long, and some were poorly synced and difficult to complete. GM was friendly but the room was an uphill battle due to its poor game design. 4/10. Would not recommend this room, even to experienced escapers trying to finish out all the nearby rooms.

An absolutely fantastic room. This one is definitely is clearly designed for escape room enthusiasts. Excellent execution of a murder mystery room. 8.5/10. One of the top rooms in Orange County

One word: Yikes. Whoever built this room does not know how to design a usable escape room computer interface and probably should do some more research before integrating bad DIY electronics into their escape rooms. The entire room revolves around a computer console (which is controlled by a mini computer called a Raspberry Pi — this is obvious because they used the incorrect power supply resulting in a LOW VOLTAGE warning). While this seems insignificant, it makes the computer console slow to a crawl and almost totally unresponsive. This makes the game nearly unplayable, and you will spend half your time getting your mouse clicks to register instead of solving puzzles. (If the makers of the escape room are reading this, please install the correct power supply or just get rid of the computer console). This room had the potential to be at least okay if this worked properly, but as it was it was quite a chore to get through. 3/10. Needs serious work.

The lower end of what I’d give a “thumbs up”. Very linear and the puzzles felt disjointed. Was generally fun and a very cute concept. Most of the puzzles felt on the easier side and the connection between the puzzles ate up time as they could be a bit nonsensical. A lot of veteran players’ escape room intuition serves against you in this room. Could be something special with some rework, better connections between puzzles, and more plentiful puzzles overall. Currently a 6/10. Worth doing if you are low on highly rated rooms.
