Treasure IslandBrain Games Escape RoomEscape roomIRLLots to do, funny and original puzzles, and great set; the experience was marred by several mechanical and reset problems.
La Cerveseria [The Brewery]EnigmikEscape roomIRLOriginal concept, clean and well-clued puzzles, many well-thought-out multi-player interactions, great sense of humor. The GM told us they were careful to design a game where everyone has something to do, and it shows. Also you come away a souvenir you can drink :-).
Distrito 111 [District 111]Unreal Room Escape Sant Martí – BarcelonaEscape roomIRLReally enjoyed it. Lots to do (for our team of 2), gritty post-apocalyptic set with memorable interactions, clean puzzles, helpful game master. I wasn't sure how some of our tasks tied in with the overall objective but it was still great fun. (I think this game was newly-available in English, and the GM apologized for his limited English, but we had no language problems with it.) That it's tucked incongruously inside an apartment complex in a residential neighborhood adds to the charm.
HeirloomExitus Room EscapeEscape roomIRLNot the biggest (especially by European standards) or most lavish room, but it was really fun, funny, and intense. Some surprises (we were sworn to secrecy!) which should appeal especially to enthusiasts. There are jump scares, but I didn't think it was too bad. At one point there is an eye-level laser--don't look into it! There is some personalization (they ask you for a picture of one of the players when you book the room) which we found enjoyably creepy. Our GM was also the owner and designer and he played multiple parts quite well, even though he told us afterwards that his English isn't that great and our experience would have been _even better_ if we could have done it in Spanish. (We found out later that he had won an award for "Best Game Master " in Spain). We had a wonderful chat with him afterwards; he's a really nice guy (unlike his in-game personas!). The room is definitely worth the trip to Parafolls.
Noche de Perros [Night of Dogs]Distrito 7Escape roomIRLWe like rooms with unusual themes, and we enjoyed Distrito 7 in Pamplona very much. It works hard (maybe too hard) to have a coherent plot line. It starts off in a realistic-looking bar in a crime-ridden neighborhood in Manhattan, other rooms in the game also have a realistic feel (you can see one of them on their website). Many of the puzzles suffer from the weird logic peculiar to escape rooms but were still quite fun. Afterwards, the GM told us that their goal was to make ordinary items seem surprising; I think they succeeded. It's a 90-minute game and feels like a lot of content; as a team of 2 we felt a little exhausted by the end. There are multiple rooms in the game, but also multiple acts, with different objectives and moods. In addition to the GM helping us, there were some NPCs (human and otherwise). Most of the Spanish text had English translations taped over them and were fine, but we struggled with some of the recorded audio, some of which was in Spanish. There are some pretty easy physical challenges. The GM's English was fine, but he told us after the game that he had actually stopped working at that escape room company a couple of weeks ago, but they called him back just so he could be the GM for us in English.
The Fun HouseCross Roads Escape GamesEscape roomIRLWe had modest expectations for this gen-1 game, but it was a lot of fun--a bright and silly set, a theatrical and goofy NPC, solid puzzles, great sense of humor throughout.
Evil Dead 2Hourglass EscapesEscape roomIRLA very slick room with great production values and some special effects that I hadn't seen before. Puzzles and gameplay were fine.
Hope EndThe Ministry Of PeculiaritiesEscape roomIRLTerrific NPC interaction from lobby to end. A masterclass in the art of revealing narrative through interaction design.
