61 escape rooms
During the construction of a new escape room, the building crew discovers some previously unknown rooms in the basement. Naturally, curiosity gets the better of them, and they want to investigate what lies beyond the newly excavated passage. Fortunately, they have contacted a group of urban explorers who can take a closer look at the rooms. Your task is to find evidence of what has been going on down there. The story is well developed, and the experience begins with your very first interaction with the gamemaster. You are quickly drawn into the narrative, and it feels as though you are stepping into a situation that is already unfolding rather than simply being introduced to an escape room. Unfortunately, the site manager cannot follow you through the excavated passage because he has forgotten his safety boots. You are therefore given a flashlight and a walkie-talkie before crawling through the opening yourselves to investigate the unknown rooms. It is an effective way to start the experience, making you an active part of the story from the very beginning. The atmosphere is dark and well executed. Although the rooms are dimly lit, navigating them is not a problem, as everyone has their own flashlight. This also creates a good balance between being able to explore your surroundings and never quite knowing what might be lurking just beyond the beam of light. Visually, the room is exceptionally well built. Film professionals were involved in its construction, and this is clearly reflected in the level of detail and the convincing environment. It feels like a real, abandoned facility rather than a set built for an escape room. The only elements that really stand out from the setting are the green electrical sockets, although these are necessary for safety reasons. Lighting and sound play a major role in the experience, and both are very well integrated into the room. Together with the other effects, they create a constant sense of unease. You never quite know when something is going to happen, which keeps you alert and aware of your surroundings throughout the experience. The puzzles are not particularly difficult, but that works well for this type of room. You spend a fair amount of attention watching what is happening around you, so the puzzles themselves do not need to be especially complicated. They also fit the story very well and are cleverly designed. Some elements show signs of wear, but considering the setting — a facility that has supposedly been closed for 40 years — this actually feels quite appropriate. The important thing is that everything works as it should. As the title suggests, Project Poltergeist is not for the faint-hearted. The scare factor is high, and the combination of lighting, sound and special effects keeps your heart racing throughout the experience. You quickly become nervous about standing too close to doors and windows because you never know what might emerge from the darkness. It is particularly the constant anticipation of something happening that makes the experience so effective. Overall, Project Poltergeist is a very well-executed horror experience in which the design, story and effects come together seamlessly. The puzzles are on the easier side, but that hardly matters when the surroundings and scare factor keep you on your toes throughout. This combination makes it an entertaining experience for both newcomers and experienced escape room players, although the main appeal is undoubtedly the suspense and horror.
