Eguzkilore means “flower of the sun”; indeed, it was believed to possess the beneficial properties of the king star, able to drive away with its light the evil spirits, storms and any other danger. Legend has it that every night the evil spirits went to the houses, but in order to enter they had to tell the exact number of petals of the eguzkilore that was hanging on the door. However, the flower had thousands of petals and, every time they were wrong, they had to start over and over again. Thus, they spent all night counting the petals of the eguzkilore without giving the answer, until the first rays of the sun drove them away. This was how the eguzkilore fulfilled its protective function.
