Incredibly polished and beautiful, this game is the closest I've played to what I think of as the platonic ideal of a (standard) escape room. There were multiple points in the game where I was wowed by what was happening, the set was great to look at and interact with, puzzles made sense and had cool interactions. This game didn't push the envelope in terms of actors or scale like some of my other favorite games, but what it does, it does brilliantly. My only regret is about a memorable souvenir that the game leaves you with. Afterwards, I learned that other groups were able to get one per person (instead of one per group) by asking - I really wish we had thought to!

4 enthusiasts was fine, but the game isn't super parallelizable so 2-3 would probably also be good.

I recently played 18 of the best rooms across Benelux and this was my favorite; it is definitely in my top 4 all time and I will have to think hard about whether it’s actually #1. This room has it all: beautiful set, great puzzles, wonderful GMing, a good story, a couple of huge wow moments, and a nice souvenir. I cannot understand how it’s not in the top 10 in TERPECA. If somebody was asking me what a perfect escape room looks like, I’d just have them play The Alchemist.

Allow me to start by saying I've seen grand beautiful escape room sets before. This was certainly in that category, but never have I interacted with a set like I did this game. I will simply say that you will ABSOLUTELY know when you have solved something. The puzzles are lovingly crafted, in theme and distinctly unique. This game is a cinematic masterpiece. A living work of art. It brings me back to the old MYST games on PC, but brought to life. As an escape room designer, no game has ever inspired me on the level of this game. This experience makes me want to reach to a higher standard. The only appropriate response I have to Sherlocked and their amazing team is....thank you.

Gameplay

They somehow made a grand set feel minimalist when it came to finding clues and puzzle content. This kept the action flowing at a beautiful pace.

Atmosphere

Movie quality sets with many cinematic moments

Customer service

Incredibly welcoming and perfectly in character.

I just clicked back and forth between both high tech and mechanical options but I think high tech has to win. This game has a lot.

Hollyyyyy set design! From smaller puzzle elements to larger set pieces, every component is made with the most gorgeous, high quality materials - it really feels like you’re walking into a genuine library! During our post-play chat with the GM, he explained that the room took four years to create due to all the custom elements - and this really shows in every detail. It also takes place inside a historic trade building which lends to the atmosphere. So, from the get go, when your GM picks you up in character to when you step in the room… you’re fully immersed. Without spoiling anything, my two favourite moments included the bespoke medallion (and souvenir) created in-game, and the impressive tech, music and lighting during the grand finale. Simply exceptional!

504 escape rooms

The two things an escape room needs to be memorable are a beginning that hooks you right away and an ending that leaves you in awe of what you just accomplished. This room has both. It turns out that everything between the beginning and the ending is also great. The level of craft and engineering that went into the set and the props is incredible. There are at least two elements of this room that I have never seen done in an escape room and I think I am unlikely ever to see them done anywhere else. This is simply a must-play.

Story

The story makes the most sense if you have already played the rest of Sherlocked’s rooms (including The Lost Cabinet) but I think it would be fine on its own too. I am sure that the gamemaster tailors the intro based on how much game-world knowledge the players already have.

Ideal number of players

We played with 2 although the minimum is listed as 3 (we cleared this with the venue in advance). I think 3-4 would be fine. More than 4 and a particular section of the room would be very crowded.

There are some breakable things (none of which are meant to be broken).

Was anything broken?

No

Live actors

No

No live actor in the usual escape room sense, but the game master is a character and will interact with you before, during, and after the game.

Physically active

Somewhat

Climbing up and down stairs and ladders. No crawling.

Accessibility

Parts of the room would be impossible to get to for a wheelchair user. I use a cane and was able to get everywhere with some help.

Easy to find location

Yes

Parking

Easy

Easy in the sense that there is a parking deck, but it is expensive and driving in Amsterdam is fraught. The location is very close to the central transit station, and the transit in Amsterdam is efficient.
