The Aztec people believe that long ago the eye of their sun god, Huitzilopochtli, was cast into a great lake, showing them where to build their empire. The eye, if it was ever considered to be more than a myth, was presumed lost during the Spanish Conquest, but recent expeditions in Mexico’s southern jungles seem to imply that it is, indeed, real – and was purposefully hidden from the invading Spanish!
