The deranged minister of Crickley Church decided to kill his entire congregation after their confessions convinced his twisted mind that they had, among themselves, committed the 7 Deadly Sins. After inciting a curse on the children playing in the rooms beneath the church he buries himself alive in the church’s hidden crypt, while promising to haunt the church forevermore. Now it’s up to you to locate the hidden crypt, find the dagger, and drive it through the heart of the evil minister before time runs out. Then, and only then, you will be saved and destroy the curse forever.

511 escape rooms

I wanted to like this room from the opening video (I like a dark theme). Unfortunately the puzzle design lets it down.

Gameplay

The puzzles themselves work fine, but the in-game cluing is a very mixed bag. About half the puzzles left us wondering how anyone would intuit the meaning of the vague information you’re given. “Guess what I’m thinking” puzzles are a dealbreaker for me. One major visual element of the room is actively misleading. A significant puzzle is highly color dependent. In a dark room where you have to shine a flashlight on things.

Atmosphere

Set design etc. are all in line with what you expect from Escapology. It’s not as cool as Scooby-Doo, but there are a couple of nice effects.

No

Story

The theme was surprisingly dark, but I’m here for it.

Difficulty

Medium

Easy if you are on the same brainwave on the designer and hard if you aren’t. We had about 50% of each so I’ll say medium.

Ideal number of players

Typical Escapology footprint so the spaces are relatively small.

Scary

Spooky

The theme is dark. Images of and references to death throughout. Blasphemy is definitely on the menu.

Accessibility

Small spaces but all level. Wide doorways. A couple of puzzles require opening locks in awkward places. The room is too dark to solve without using the provided flashlights.

Fun puzzles though a little all over the place, but still interesting. Theming of puzzles didn't always seem to fit the theme of the room. There are maps on the walls that are poorly labeled that would definitely be easier with outside knowledge (hard to say if it is required). There the decor/set dressing felt rather cheap like all the money was spent on one prop that didn't seem to fit anyways. Headstones that were cheap and stuck to walls. Pictures that were part of the wallpaper and looked flat and out of place and at weird heights. Staff was super nice. We had a minor issue and they came right in and resolved it.

Gameplay
Atmosphere

Just feels cheap like an older generation room with pictures as part of the wallpaper instead of props. Cheap plastic used in places that just look do like they were taped to the walls. Compared to the other rooms they have this one just felt like it had placeholder props and set pieces.
