Escaparium’s most mysterious room was a magical delight! Obviously, I knew it was about more than just a wardrobe for sale, but I had no idea that it would be so cute, so whimsical, and so much fun. It actually had a nice story and the puzzles cleverly drove the narrative, but what impressed me most were the animatronics, effects, and the extraordinary performance of our gamemaster / live actor. It felt like a job for 3 people but she handled it almost entirely on her own! Oh, and it had the most wonderful transition of any game we’ve ever played. I can see why it’s a favourite for so many people.

Wardrobe for Sale at Escaparium was a visually stunning and highly immersive escape room with stunning set design. Our game master was incredibly talented; I mistook him as an animatronic at first! Players who enjoy the immersion more than the puzzles will adore this room. However, you are “rushed” through the room because another group will come in when you are halfway done with your experience. This leads to the game master providing a lot of clues, which makes it feel like you are following directions rather than solving a puzzle. The story also became a bit confusing, though that may have been because I wasn't paying close attention. Another issue was that several puzzles—particularly in the second room—lacked clear connections or clues indicating what to do next. The room was also quite linear, with many tasks locked behind previous progress. While several puzzles required cooperation, making multiple players feel useful, the linear design seems to exist to slow teams down, which could leave experienced larger groups with little to do.

Gameplay

The first part had better gameplay than the second part, as I understood where the story was going and enjoyed all of the puzzles. The second part felt more linear and confusing.

Atmosphere

Incredible set design. The transition from the first part to the second part was very cool!

Customer service

GM was one of the only ones who chatted with us after the experience. He also adapted in the moment to answer questions in a non-awkward way.

The story was overall interesting, though the second part of the experience got confusing.

If you let the GM do everything, it's easy, but if you try to solve some things yourself, some puzzles do require you to think!

This set is beautiful and magical. Such an incredible attention to detail. The characters are great and captivating, the story is great and the room has a decent amount of puzzles that can be handled in parallel by a team. Beautiful set and wow moments.

1) The set design and build quality are amazing. When the lights come up and the space is revealed, I couldn't help but smile. The details, lighting, and sound design all combine to create a magical place that feels real, The puzzles were varied and thematic, and the in-room character was fun to interact with. 2) Our GM was way too aggressive in providing hints. Often we'd barely processed what a puzzle was asking of us before the GM piped in to hand us the key insight. At one point while manipulating a puzzle and talking through it with each othr, after someone said something to the effect of "this goes here", the GM said "Are you sure?" We neither wanted not asked for her advice, and this kind of thing happened throughout the game, often robbing us of an "aha!" moment. It undermined the entire reason for doing escape rooms in the first place, and really frustrated us. 3) The latter part of the game involved multiple occasions where we had to hide and watch actors slowly play out the storyline. Perhaps some people enjoy this, but I come to escape rooms to be the active agent, not a passive observer. I'd have preferred a tightened script that minimized these captive vignettes and left the focus on us as players, rather than actors playing out the telegraphed narrative arc.

Gameplay

The gameplay in the first half of the game flowed well and made thematic and narrative sense. The gameplay in the second half was much less coherent, and had some big affordance issues that had to be patched via GM hinting.

Atmosphere

Fantastic set design, lighting, sound, and props. Really great production values across the board.

Story

There was too much story, with too large an emphasis on characters who have barely any development and consequently we don't really care about. It bogs down the second half of the game.

Was anything broken?

Yes

Two lights were broken on the acorn puzzle, and the entire raft mechanism broke down on us right after we got on-- eventually a GM had to come out and have us walk.

Live actors

Yes

The main actor in the front half of the game was delightful to interact with in character, despite her over-aggressive hinting.

This is one of those games you’ll remember for a while. Very whimsical, very story-line heavy, a lot of breaks during the game to follow along with the story, had a live actor, and unique elements. This was a challenging room - we are an experienced team, and some of these puzzles were very layered! Luckily, your adorable little hint giver is with you the whole time.

Another of our favorites now. The room itself has some of the most adorable puzzles we have seen and then another part of game that is very special and unique that surprised us.

Our game master and actor helped with many of the games and he’s so sweet and helpful

Wardrobe for Sale might have been my personal least favorite of the 4 we did at this location, but I think it was one of the top rooms for others in my group. The set design is phenomenal with at least one jaw dropping moment. I also think this room had the most focus on the actual puzzles, and I like how there are lots of sections where you need to solve a bunch of things in parallel. My slight issues with this room were twofold. First, there were a few puzzles where we didn't actually know we solved them, or maybe they were broken. Secondly, I think the story in this room, while very important, was maybe not as interesting as some of the others and often interrupted the gameplay due to some slight pacing issues. To be clear, these are all very minor complaints, and these rooms stand above any others I've ever done. I'm just reviewing the rooms relative to the other 3 I did here: Magnifico , Lost Island of the Voodoo Queen, and the Hidden Cathedral

It was a really great immersive experience, but I was left wanting more in terms of puzzles and the gameplay itself. We often had to wait for the game to trigger the next stage rather than moving forward on our own, and that made it feel like a stage-based challenge. It was really enjoyable, and I’m glad we did it, but the atmosphere was more “childish” than we expected—we were expecting something different.

Gameplay

The first room doesn't feel linear, but some parts are; we spend time trying to solve puzzles that aren't available yet (not all the elements are in place).

Well this room is absolutely spectacular - especially the first half of it in particular. The magic is real and we fell head over heels for a character in this story! The puzzles were fun and whimsical and wonderful. Our GM was just fantastic here. I felt in awe of my surroundings for almost all of the game.
