The scariest haunted house in the world is a short list, not one name. The 17th Door in California makes you sign a waiver, Cutting Edge in Texas once held the Guinness record for length, and Fuji-Q's haunted hospital in Japan keeps you walking for about 50 minutes.
The scariest haunt for your group depends on what scares you. Some places restrain you, soak you and make you sign a release.
Others hold world records for sheer length. And some simply earn the highest ratings from people who walked through them.
This list covers all three.
We checked every attraction's 2026 status on its own website or in 2025-2026 reporting, and we added Morty rating labels where Morty users have rated a haunt. As of October 2026, Morty lists nearly 5,000 haunted houses, trails, mazes, hayrides and scare zones across 26 countries, so the data reaches well past the US. Rating labels below were pulled from Morty on October 8, 2026.
The short answer, by type of fear:
  • Our picks for the most intense haunts you can book in 2026: The 17th Door (California) and Lost Souls Alley (Poland), both with waivers or chosen contact levels.
  • Longest walk-throughs: Pure Terror (New York), which cites a current Guinness record, plus former record holder Cutting Edge (Texas) and Fuji-Q's 50-minute Senritsu Meikyu (Japan).
  • Highest-rated on Morty from this list: The 13th Gate (Louisiana), rated Very Positive.

New to haunts and not sure how much fear you want? Start with our guide to whether escape rooms are scary, which covers the same "how intense is too intense" question.

What makes a haunted house the "scariest"?

There is no official ranking, and every haunt calls itself the scariest. In practice, people mean one of three things.
Contact and control. Extreme haunts let actors grab you, restrain you or get you wet, and they require a signed waiver. The fear comes from losing control.
Scale. Record-holding haunts keep you walking for half an hour or more, so the dread builds instead of peaking once.
Craft. The best-rated haunts win on sets, actors and pacing. A Morty rating label (such as Very Positive, built from Morty users' ratings) is a good signal here, because it reflects what people felt on the way out. Keep in mind it measures how much people enjoyed a haunt, not how scared they were.

The extreme end: haunts that touch, restrain or test you

1. The 17th Door (Buena Park, California)

The 17th Door is one of the most intense haunts you can book in the US. It runs on select nights from September 25 to November 1, 2026, according to Visit Buena Park, at 8420 On the Mall.
Its FAQ is blunt: actors may grab you, things may fall on you and "you may also get very wet." Everyone signs a waiver covering things like electrical shock, water, strobe lighting and restraints, and the haunt is recommended for ages 16 and up. The walk-through takes about 35 minutes.
There is a safe word, "Mercy," which makes actors back off or lets you leave. The FAQ also warns that three rooms cannot be exited once you are inside. On Morty, it is rated Very Positive (see The 17th Door on Morty).

2. Lost Souls Alley (Kraków, Poland)

Lost Souls Alley mixes a haunted house with escape-room puzzles, and it lets you pick how rough it gets. The official site lists Green, Yellow and Red versions with rising levels of fear, pain and physical challenge.
Founded in 2013, it calls itself the first interactive haunted attraction with escape-room elements in Poland. It sits at Floriańska 6 in central Kraków, takes groups of up to six, and lists 2026 prices from 65 zł for the Green version to 85 zł for Red.
It is open daily, so it works for a Halloween trip or a random weekend in March. It is rated Very Positive on Morty (Lost Souls Alley on Morty). Tip: start at a lower color if anyone in your group is unsure, since the upper levels involve real physical contact.

3. Senritsu Meikyu at Fuji-Q Highland (Fujiyoshida, Japan)

Japan's best-known haunted house sits inside a theme park at the foot of Mount Fuji. Senritsu Meikyu, often translated as the Labyrinth of Fear, is a hospital-themed walk-through that the Fuji-Q Highland page lists at about 900 meters and about 50 minutes.
That length is what makes it brutal. You walk an abandoned-ward set on foot for close to an hour, with no ride vehicle to carry you through.
Fuji-Q lists it at ¥4,000 per group of up to four with a one-day pass, or ¥8,000 per group without one, and it requires a timed ticket. Grab that ticket early on busy days. Morty users have rated other Fuji-Q attractions on the Fuji-Q Highland venue page, but the haunted hospital itself does not have Morty ratings yet.

4. Cutting Edge Haunted House (Fort Worth, Texas)

Cutting Edge fills a former meat-packing plant at 1701 E. Lancaster Ave. in Fort Worth. According to Wikipedia, it held the Guinness World Record for "Longest Walk-through Horror House (indoors)" in 2009 and 2015, measured at 5,387 feet.
Scale is the scare here. You spend a long stretch moving through an old industrial building, and the length wears down your nerves before the big moments land.
The official site posts a 2026 calendar of open dates. It also notes parking is cash only, so bring cash.
Cutting Edge is rated Mostly Positive on Morty. It is new on Morty, so treat the rating as an early read (Cutting Edge on Morty). Tip: it opens on select nights only, so pick a date from the calendar before you plan the drive.

5. Pure Terror Scream Park (Monroe, New York)

In Orange County, New York, Pure Terror says it is "certified by Guinness World Records as the longest haunted attraction in the world." It packs 10 haunted attractions into one park at 1008 NY-17M in Monroe and has been running since 2010.
It opens on select nights in September, October and November. Tickets are sold online through its ticketing partner, so check prices there before you go.
On Morty, Pure Terror is rated Mostly Positive, but treat that as an early read (Pure Terror on Morty). Tip: with 10 attractions, plan on a full evening and arrive near opening.

6. Erebus (Pontiac, Michigan)

Erebus is a four-story haunt built into a former parking garage in Pontiac. Instead of one long hallway, you climb and descend through floors of sets, which keeps you guessing about where the next scare comes from. Wikipedia's Erebus entry says it held the Guinness title for "World's Largest Walk-Through Haunted Attraction" from 2005 to 2009.
The official site describes "over a half-mile indoor walk" and posts a 2026 calendar. In October 2026, WRIF reported that America Haunts named it the No. 1 "Best Scream for Your Buck" for 2026.
Erebus warns people with asthma, heart problems, seizure disorders, claustrophobia or pregnancy not to enter. It is rated Mostly Positive on Morty so far (Erebus on Morty).

7. Netherworld (Stone Mountain, Georgia)

Netherworld is celebrating its 30th season in 2026 with two new haunts, Curse of the Collector and Beyond Oblivion: Legacy of Evil. Hoodline's 2026 preview says they run through November 7 inside a 70,000-square-foot warehouse at 1313 Netherworld Way.
Expect hundreds of animatronics plus live actors. The same preview cites starting prices of $25 for one haunt or $35 for both, and prices rise on busier nights.
Morty users have rated past Netherworld shows well: Cryptid Chaos and Primordial are both rated Very Positive on Morty. See the current lineup on the Netherworld venue page or browse more haunted houses in Georgia.

8. The Darkness (St. Louis, Missouri)

The Darkness sits downtown next to historic Soulard Market and bills itself as "America's Scariest Haunted House." It spreads its scares across two floors.
Its site also advertises a giant monster selfie experience, a serial killer escape room and a horror retail store. That makes it a good pick for groups where only half the people want the full haunt. Tip: book an escape room next door at St. Louis Escape for the people who would rather solve puzzles than scream.
The Darkness is rated Very Positive on Morty (The Darkness on Morty).

9. The Bates Motel and Haunted Hayride (Glen Mills, Pennsylvania)

Just outside Philadelphia, the Bates Motel runs three attractions at 1835 N. Middletown Road: the Bates Motel haunted house, the Revenge of the Scarecrows haunted trail and a long-running haunted hayride.
The site posts 2026 dates and times. You get three very different kinds of scare in one night: an indoor startle house, a walk through a cornfield and a hayride.
Tip: budget a full evening if you want all three, and check the site for which attractions each ticket covers.
The Bates Motel haunted house is rated Very Positive on Morty (Bates Motel on Morty).

10. The 13th Gate (Baton Rouge, Louisiana)

The 13th Gate is one of the highest-rated haunted houses on Morty, rated Very Positive (The 13th Gate on Morty). Its underlying rating is the highest of any haunt on this list.
The official site describes 40,000 square feet and "13 nightmarish realms," including a pirate ship, a zombie graveyard and subterranean passages with live snakes. It is at 832 St. Philip Street.
The 2026 season closes with "Flashlight Fright Nights" on November 6 and 7. If snakes are your line, this is the one to skip.

11. Mysterious Mansion (Gatlinburg, Tennessee)

Not every top-rated haunt is extreme. Mysterious Mansion is a three-story house on River Road in Gatlinburg with secret passageways, dark corridors and actors waiting inside, and it is open year-round.
It is rated Very Positive on Morty (Mysterious Mansion on Morty). That is a strong result for a self-guided walk-through that has been scaring Smoky Mountain visitors for more than 40 years.
The site lists general admission at $22.37 for adults and teens before tax, rising to $26.85 during its Halloween events. It closes on Wednesdays, so plan around that. More options are on Morty's Tennessee haunted houses page.

12. Halloween Horror Nights (Orlando, Florida)

Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights is one of the best-known theme park haunt events in the world. Its 35th year runs from August 28 to November 1, 2026, with an "Infernal Carnival of Nightmares" theme, according to Orlando Weekly.
The headline house, Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control, teams up two of the event's longtime original characters for the first time. It is rated Very Positive on Morty (Jack & Oddfellow on Morty).
Tip: the houses are short, but lines are not. Go on an early-season weeknight if you can. Every rated house is on the Universal Orlando venue page.

13. Knott's Scary Farm (Buena Park, California)

Knott's Scary Farm is a Southern California Halloween tradition, and Morty users rate its mazes every season. Cinema Slasher is rated Very Positive on Morty (Cinema Slasher on Morty), and it returns in 2026.
Haunted Attraction Network's 2026 guide lists 26 nights from September 17 to October 31 with 10 mazes. It also notes The Chilling Chambers is in its final season and Mesmer: Sideshow of the Mind retired after 2025.
The guide lists single-night tickets at $75 to $89 online from October 8 through Halloween, and the event is not recommended for kids under 13. The 17th Door is in the same city, so a Buena Park weekend can cover both ends of the fear scale. Browse the rest on Morty's California haunted houses page.

Top-rated haunts outside the US

14. Tulleys Shocktober Fest (West Sussex, England)

Tulleys Shocktober Fest calls itself Europe's largest Halloween scream park, and 2026 is its 30th anniversary. Great British Life lists 26 nights starting October 2 at Tulleys Farm in Turners Hill, near Gatwick.
The official ticket page shows general admission from £42.95, with haunts running into the late evening and the season ending November 1. It is recommended for ages 16 and up.
New for 2026, The Cellar Returns sends you through damp tunnels, crumbling passageways and underground chambers, and Doom Town gets an expansion.
Morty users have rated a dozen Tulleys haunts from earlier seasons. The top-rated are Doom Town, Purgatory and Wastelands Penitentiary, all rated Very Positive and all part of the 2026 lineup.

15. Door Seven Haunted House (Surfers Paradise, Australia)

Door Seven is a year-round haunted house run with the escape room company Padlock'd in Paradise Centre, Surfers Paradise. The official page describes live actors and an experience of about 10 to 15 minutes from briefing to exit.
It is short, but Morty users rate it well: it is rated Very Positive on Morty (Door Seven on Morty). That puts it among the best-rated Australian haunts on Morty.
Tip: pair it with one of Padlock'd's escape rooms in the same building for a full night out on the Gold Coast.

How to pick your level of scary

Read the waiver before you go. If a haunt requires one, it will tell you exactly what can happen: water, restraints, shocks or physical contact. If you would not agree to it in daylight, do not agree to it in line.
Learn the safe word or exit rule. Extreme haunts like The 17th Door use a safe word. Most standard haunts let you leave by asking an actor or staff member.
Match the haunt to the weakest link. A group moves at the pace of its most nervous member. A craft-driven haunt like Mysterious Mansion or a theme park event is a better shared night than a contact haunt.
Check this year's dates. Most haunts are seasonal and their lineups change every year. Always confirm on the official site before you travel.
