Looking for things to do in Chicago at night? Start with the skyline at sunset, then pick a lane: a late jazz set, an escape room that runs until midnight, a haunted house in the suburbs, or a basement speakeasy that pours until 2 a.m.
This guide is built for October 2026. Every venue below was open when we checked this week, and the upcoming October events have confirmed 2026 dates.
It skips most of the daytime classics. If you want museums, ballgames and The Second City, our list of things to do in Chicago for adults covers those. This one starts when the sun goes down.

Chicago at night: skyline views and landmarks

1. Watch the sun set from Skydeck Chicago

The glass Ledge boxes on the 103rd floor of Willis Tower look even stranger after dark, when the grid of streetlights runs all the way to the horizon. Skydeck is open until 8 p.m. most nights from October through February, and until 9 p.m. on Saturdays, with last entry 30 minutes before close.
Tip: October sunsets get earlier every week, so look up tonight's sunset time and arrive 30 minutes before it. One visit then gets you daylight, sunset and city lights. Hours and tickets are on the Skydeck Chicago site.

2. Catch ART on THE MART from the Riverwalk

Thursday through Sunday, the whole river face of THE MART turns into a 2.5-acre movie screen. From September 10 to December 27, 2026, the free show runs 7:30 to 8 p.m.
The fall program (through November 15) features projections from Argonne National Laboratory and the Adler Planetarium, then a Joffrey Ballet Nutcracker piece takes over for the holidays. Bring a jacket and stand on the Riverwalk across the water. Schedule: artonthemart.com.

3. Take a sunset cruise onto Lake Michigan

Wendella's Chicago Sunset Cruise leaves from the Wrigley Building at 400 N Michigan Avenue, runs the river, passes through the Chicago Lock and turns around on the lake as the skyline lights up. It lasts 90 minutes.
Wendella lists adult tickets at $45. Boat season winds down in the fall, so check this week's departures on the Wendella tours page before you plan around it.

4. Ride the Centennial Wheel at Navy Pier

The enclosed gondolas climb nearly 200 feet over the lake, which makes the wheel a warmer view than any rooftop in October. Navy Pier's fall hours run until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 8 p.m. the rest of the week, and entry to the pier itself is free.
The VIP gondola has a glass floor and seats up to four. Details: Centennial Wheel.

5. Stargaze at the Adler on a Wednesday night

On Wednesdays the Adler Planetarium stays open until 10 p.m. for Adler at Night. Weather permitting, the Doane Observatory, home to the largest public telescope in the area, is open too.
It is a calm first stop before dinner in the South Loop. Illinois residents get free admission on select days, so check the calendar on the Adler Planetarium site before you buy.

6. Walk Northerly Island for the free skyline view

The path along the west side of Northerly Island faces straight back at the Loop, and at night the skyline reflects off the harbor. The park is open until 11 p.m.
Pair it with the Adler next door. Park info: Northerly Island Park.

Escape rooms after dark

Morty's data shows about 130 open escape rooms within roughly 25 miles of the Loop (as of October 2026). The three picks below are bookable on Morty and rated highest by Morty users after their experience, with the local indies first. Ratings are as of October 2026.

7. Try the creepy rooms at Just Escape Room in La Grange

Just Escape Room is a single-location, locally run venue in the western suburbs, and it holds two of the highest-rated rooms in the area. Cabin Murder and The Haunted Doll Shop are both rated Very Positive.
Every booking is private, each room runs 60 minutes for 2 to 10 people depending on the room, and the Doll Shop has a few scares built in. The venue's site lists hours until 10:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
If your group is nervous about scares, our guide to whether escape rooms are scary explains what to expect.

9. Play a late escape room at The Escape Game Chicago

The Escape Game Chicago is part of a national chain, but it is the late-night standout. It sits on East Ontario Street in River North and is open until midnight every day, so a 10 p.m. room after dinner is easy.
Prison Break is rated Very Positive on Morty, and Legend of the Yeti (rated Very Positive) is the pick if your group has done it. Hints are unlimited, so it works for first-timers. Book every spot if you want the room to yourselves.

21. Find The Drifter under the Green Door Tavern

Three easy night plans

River North, no car needed. Watch ART on THE MART at 7:30 from the Riverwalk, walk to The Escape Game Chicago for an 8:30 room, then reserve the 10:30 set at Andy's Jazz Club and arrive by 10. All three are within a short walk of each other.
South Loop and Chinatown. Start at the Adler on a Wednesday, walk Northerly Island for the skyline, catch the night's blues set at Buddy Guy's Legends, and finish with a late dinner at Chi Cafe.
October scare night. Book The Haunted Doll Shop in La Grange or a horror room at Panic Escape Room in Addison for early evening, then drive on to 13th Floor or HellsGate for a timed haunt ticket. Pick a driver who skips the drinks, since the suburban haunts are a drive from the city.
