The Inheritance
Narrow Escape Rooms
Escape room
IRL
This was a fabulous multi-linear room full of intrigue and cool ideas. It kept us busy with lots of different types of puzzles, including several ideas and concepts we had not encountered before. The nice flow to the room crafted an overall narrative that made sense, leading to a challenging and really fun experience.
Undetected
Narrow Escape Rooms
Escape room
IRL
A pretty cool heist theme with almost entirely hi-tech puzzles. Funny and cheeky, with lots of sci-fi/pop culture references. As with a lot of tech rooms, not all of the puzzles made sense in the space, but it still provided a fun and challenging experience.
The Witching Hour
Scram Escape Rooms Macquarie Park
Escape room
IRL
I’m a sucker for creepy rooms and this one ticked the boxes! While not strictly super scary, it was the potential of jump scares that kept us on our toes the entire time. The lights flickering and going off occasionally was a little frustrating if you’re in the middle of solving a puzzle, but it really added to the overall atmosphere. Very solid theming, tech and sound design, with many different spaces and an assortment of puzzles. Our first Scram experience was a success and we will be back for more.
The Lost Mine
Mission Escape Pitt St
Escape room
IRL
An older tech-heavy escape room with no padlocks that was pretty fun and challenging. There were some really cool things about this room that impressed us, including hi-tech special effects and abstract puzzle ideas. But some of the puzzles were also quite finicky because they're so tech-reliant, and there was a frustrating one that required very good hearing. Apart from that, just some minor lack of attention issues such as typos and loud music (see frustrating puzzle above).
The Wizard's Chamber
Escape This
Escape room
IRL
A really beautiful room with exquisite props! The puzzles were generally solid and the tech was impressive, though it felt like the room didn't live up to its full potential and could have utilised more of the space and added more to keep players busy (some drawers, cabinets, and props never came into play). Our team of 4 (including 3 kids) breezed through in 35 minutes with no hints, and that was with us taking a little while to get going at the start and getting stuck on the final puzzle for 10 minutes! While we still had fun, the room didn't fully satisfy.
Paris Escape
Social Escape Rooms
Escape room
IRL
This is Social Escape's oldest room but still a really nice and fun little adventure with a quirky premise -- your flight is due to depart and you have only an hour to find your passport and plane in your boutique hotel in Paris! We did this as a team of 3 and had a great time, as we always do at Social Escape. The puzzles were not overly difficult, though there were a few that could potentially trip up some players. In all, a breezy, lighthearted escape room with terrific flow and cool puzzles.
Baker Street Mystery
Social Escape Rooms
Escape room
IRL
Baker Street Mystery proves that a one-room escape game can still be awesome. To be honest, I didn't expect too much from it, but we ended up loving the Sherlock theme, the challenging puzzles, superb game flow, and overall fun factor. And it won't be a one-room escape game for much longer, because Social Escape is currently revamping the entire room with all new bespoke puzzles. We'll definitely be back once the upgrade is complete!
End of the Road
Next Level Escape
Escape room
IRL
Next Level delivers again! End of the Road is another really fun room with solid theming, good laughs, and the best GM interactions. The game started even before we got in the lift and was elevated to a whole new level of immersion thanks to the acting prowess of our brilliant GM Chris. Despite the zombie theme, this is much more of a cheeky room than a horror one, with some really cool puzzles including one I never expected! I only wish it could have been a little longer, as we somehow managed to get out in under half the 75 minute time limit without any hints.
Yin Yang
Elude Escape Rooms
Escape room
IRL
Elude delivers again with an exciting and challenging room! The Chinese philosophy- themed Yin Yang is gorgeous and serene, but had us sweating bullets towards the end! With some pretty tricky dexterity and logic puzzles eating our time away, we definitely couldn’t be shy about asking for a few hints, but we’re glad to have escaped with less than 4 minutes left. Featuring arguably the most difficult rooms in Sydney, Elude is definitely the place to go for enthusiasts hungry for a challenge.
Perpetual Motion
Elude Escape Rooms
Escape room
IRL
Perpetual Motion was yet another challenging and thrilling room with awesome puzzles. It was nothing like what I had expected but we still had a nerve-wracking blast of a time. We wasted a fair bit of time on red herrings and on one particular puzzle that we needed a few hints to crack, escaping by the skin of our teeth with 37 seconds to spare! Feels so good to finally beat a room at Elude, definitely the most challenging place we’ve been to in Sydney! Yin Yang is next!
