The Cookhouse
13th Hour Escape Room - Wharton
Escape room
IRL
8.2/10 The Cookhouse is just another strong example of how 13th Hour know how to do escape rooms. This room falls into the overall story and theme of the murderous Hayden family. All the puzzles and tasks are on theme and fit so well with this story. The strongest part of this experience was the beginning in our opinion. The actual kitchen had such great detail and made it a very unique experience, but as we progressed through the game, we felt the level of detail fell off a bit. The best parts of this game were based in this area and we wish the other rooms felt more connected with it. This is a more search heavy room as well. There were a few times that we got stumped and that was because we didn’t search specific areas well enough which would’ve lead to the next thing. 13th Hour has a great lineup of rooms, including The Cookhouse, but might be found lower on our totem poll of their games. We would prefer some of their other games but we do not often give hearts on this app. When we do it’s because they truly deserve it and 13th Hour most definitely do deserve it with The Cookhouse.
The Campground
13th Hour Escape Room - Wharton
Escape room
IRL
9.3/10 The big 100 and we couldn’t have been happier with choosing The Campground as our 100th room done together. Let’s make this nice and clear, this is a room made for enthusiasts. The amount of puzzles and immersive elements in here make it something enthusiasts will truly enjoy and respect. This is a 90-minute experience and has every right to be this length because of how much there is to unfold. We did escape with a little over 15 minutes to spare, but after speaking with Brandon and Gabe, who helped create the room, it’s very rare for a duo to finish with that much time left. I know a lot of the reviews say come with a larger group, but if you and your partner have done a bunch of escape rooms you guys definitely got this! All the puzzles made sense and flowed super well. There were no leaps in logic and the room was not very search heavy at all which is always a plus for us. We enjoyed the story of the room very much! The moment you meet your game master is the moment the room starts and it definitely took us by surprise (in a good way). The puzzles, environment, and music all made sense and connected with the overall story. And to top it all off there was a satisfying and unique end to the room! A minor spoiler if you have not played the room….. Yes, there is fake snow that does fall as you progress into the room, and as other reviews have mentioned it did cause us to cough and burn our breathing even after the game finished. Thankfully, as soon as we did begin to cough a bit, they did immediately stop the snow fall. I do wish that this can be solved because the snow does add a very immersive and unique element to the game. Overall, if you are an enthusiast, do yourself a favor and get out to play the Campground. 13th Hour once again hits it out of the park here and solidifies why they are the best company in the area. This is a MUST DO room!!!

Invasion
Mind Factory Escape Games
Escape room
IRL
8.2/10 We are loving the story Mind Factory is taking us through with their rooms and Invasion only heightens our anticipation for what's to come. We highly recommend playing Breathless first if you can, as it sets the stage for the story that carries over into Invasion. However, if you're only able to play Invasion, you won't be disappointed. From the outset, Invasion impressed us with its immersive storytelling and expertly crafted puzzles. The room’s flow felt seamless, with each challenge feeling like a natural progression within the story. It was clear that a lot of thought had gone into the puzzle design, and everything just clicked during our experience. For us, Invasion ended up being the superior room compared to Breathless, though we thoroughly enjoyed both. One standout feature is a particularly well-designed prop in the room, which plays a significant role in the overarching narrative. The level of detail on this prop is remarkable, and it definitely added a layer of immersion to the experience. However, as much as we loved it, we felt it could have been more integrated throughout the room, rather than just sitting in the background. Given its importance to the story, we’d have liked to see it play a more active role. Overall, Invasion at Mind Factory is a fantastic adventure for any escape room enthusiast. We’re excited to see what the team has in store for their upcoming rooms, especially after speaking with Dave, the owner. His passion for escape rooms is infectious, and it’s clear that they’re dedicated to taking their experiences to the next level. We highly recommend checking out Invasion, and don’t forget to play Breathless if you can. We can’t wait for their third room!
Storyteller's Secret
Boxaroo
Escape room
IRL
8.7/10 After traveling several miles to get to Boxaroo in Boston and try Storyteller’s Secret, we can definitely assure you it was worth it. The set itself was extraordinary and really immersed you into the author’s world. This had to be one of the best “non-escape” rooms we have been a part of, with puzzles galore and a plot that lasted over an hour without becoming boring. We personally thought the intro video and hint system really stood out (even though we didn’t need to use many hints). Our only hiccup with the room was the repetition of using and doing the same puzzles (and some technical difficulties with a specific puzzle). We wish they could have added a new layer of something, instead of having to go back to repeat what we just did. Otherwise, between the storyline, design, and gameplay, this room rightfully earned itself a rating of 8.7 on our scale.
Cativeiro - O "Jogo" [Captivity - The "Game"]
D3 Escape Room - Praça do Marquês
Escape room
IRL
9.1/10 What an experience! The immersion and storytelling the moment you knock on the door is some of the best we have ever seen in an escape room. A lot of that comes down to our game master/designer of the room, Neto. We hope you all can have him because he made the experience that much better! The storytelling and adventure we were taken on throughout the room is what really stood out for us. The puzzles themselves we thought were pretty straightforward and not too challenging! If you are ever in Porto, make sure you come out and play Captivity - the “Game!”
The Trophy Room
13th Hour Escape Room - Wharton
Escape room
IRL
9/10 13th Hour Escapes just do not miss with their rooms! Going into Trophy Room, we’ve done both their Grand Parlor and Wizard of Oz rooms and we thought there was going to be no chance that Trophy Room would compete with these other two rooms, but wow were we wrong. Yes, the trophy room doesn’t have as massive of a set as the two others, but it is still incredibly immersive with tons to discover! The puzzles were fun and flowed smoothly, the story and design of the room kept us engaged and on our toes throughout! There was one puzzle that our game master had to come in to help fix and explain for us, which did ruin the experience a bit. Without spoiling anything, we really do feel this one could be presented and instructed in a better fashion as there could be so much human error when it comes to it and ruin the whole thing (which happened to us). Would love you talk with some of you guys that have done the room about this! Other than this one hiccup, there is no questioning how amazing Trophy Room is! After 88 games played, this makes our top 5 rooms!!
Montauk Project
MyssTic Rooms
Escape room
IRL
8.1/10 Myss Tic Escape rooms have done it again creating an incredible set with puzzles that go so well with the theme and each room. There are some “stranger things” here that you wouldn’t usually do in other escape rooms, but thank goodness one of us was on top of their game to catch on to these very unique tasks! After playing 87 rooms, whenever we get to experience something new in an escape room, we absolutely love it, and there were a couple puzzles here that we have never done or seen before. There were a couple things that were broken and very worn out, to the point where our game master had to tell us during the game that something triggered but didn’t open because it is broken. The final room we felt was a bit underwhelming and they could have done a lot more with it. We still absolutely loved the Montauk Project and cannot recommend Myss Tic as a company enough!
Ghost Light
MyssTic Rooms
Escape room
IRL
9/10 After playing Ghost Light, it is no surprise why Myss Tic is such a highly recommended location in New York. Ghost Light took us on a journey that we can only describe as beautiful. They put a unique twist on a typical “ghost-theme” and made a story that will please almost anyone! The mission was clear and the journey through the room along with the puzzles fit in so well with the story. The details in this room put you right on set and make you feel as though you are about to make your broadway debut. There is one puzzle that uses smell and the scents are very strong, so if anyone is sensitive to strong scents here is your warning! But wow…. The ending of Ghost Light really stood out and we absolutely loved everything that was done in order to finish this room. After 87 games played, Ghost Light makes our top 5 games and we can’t recommend it enough! Break a leg!
The Tomb Ruins
Gnome & Raven
Escape room
IRL
8.5/10 This room instantly made our jaws drop, purely based on the size of it. We would definitely recommend coming into the game with 4 players. The story of the room was great and a great story mixed with very immersive features, like actual sand in the tomb, really make this a high quality room. There were a few non-linear puzzles throughout the room that you will either know, or you won’t know. Unfortunately for us, we didn’t know them and knew we would have to use back to back to back hints in order to solve them. We wish there was a bit more direction when solving these puzzles. We highly recommend this room!
Magic Lamp
Gnome & Raven
Escape room
IRL
8.9/10 The sets and designs of the rooms at Gnome and Raven are some of the best and biggest we have seen in Virginia. Stepping into Magic Lamp took us into “a whole new world.” We were immediately immersed in this world the moment the game master started talking to us. Magic Lamp is one of the best rooms we have done in Virginia. Everything from the story, to the set, to the puzzles were all so very well done. There were puzzles and activities across the room that we thought were very well done and stood out massively, it just fit so well with the theme. There was one puzzle that we felt could have been done better, you almost had to get lucky to find and solve it. Overall, we HIGHLY recommend coming to Gnome & Raven and trying any of their rooms, but we do have to say Magic Lamp is probably number one for us!
