Disappointing to say the least. The explanation of the goals in the beginning was super rushed and I can’t say it really felt like we had to “convince” James to help us. That’s not even how it was really explained nor what we accomplished. We were given basically unlimited money for questions, and this room can’t be completed without the actors help. I am understanding as there were points where James was part of the puzzle; but it felt more like our interactions with them was a way to avoid good game design. Basically you just hit a wall and then James facilitates the next part, over and over. It didn’t flow from
clue to clue. I’d say this is usually a reflection on the group’s skills but we are quite experienced and once we received an explanation we kept thinking “literally how are we supposed to know that without asking”. That is not good game design. 

The music sheet puzzle was the most aggravating situation. The page number order was not actually the order of the digits. Like why number the pages if that isn’t the order they should be used? We had to ask James for help but that is something that should be intentionally baked into the game design. I liked the instrument and card clue a lot but James’ “they just threw those cards up there randomly!” was not an interesting narrative. The room design around the actor was really really weak.

The puzzles did not encourage group
participation. This room could be done completely solo. While one person did something, the rest of us kinda had to just sit around and wait. Like sure we can all count together but that’s not actual collaborative game design. Also the singer having a key from the start doesn’t make any sense narratively. 

The radio having to be constantly played was overstimulating. The second room was too small for the four of us. I didn’t even get to see the resolution to the silver cup clue because I was crawling my way back into the main room from the back. 

I also did not like how James was cleaning up and resetting the room behind us as we finished puzzles. It ruined the already pretty bad immersion. Like can’t that wait til we’re done?

I liked the boxing match radio puzzle a lot. 

I also have to add that when we walked in, there was no one in the bar to greet us. We were running 2 mins late and got a call in the elevator moments before arriving asking us if we were still coming. Seconds later we walked and there was no one even there to greet us. It was just weird.

Difficult and unique puzzles. Not the hardest I’ve ever done, but it flowed really well. We had some fun “ah ha!” moments. Gorgeous room with great details.
