Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, was an English pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of Britain's North American colonies. He became a renowned pirate, his nickname derived from his thick black beard and fearsome appearance. Blackbeard only spent about two years (1716-1718) plundering the high seas. Within that time, however, he amassed a great deal of wealth. While the Spanish were busy obtaining all the gold and silver they could extract from Mexico and South America, Blackbeard and his crew waited patiently, then pounced on the treasure-laden ships as they sailed back to Spain. On November 21, 1718 in Ocracoke Inlet, North Carolina, Blackbeard was ashore entertaining guests unaware that two ships led by British Lieutenant Robert Maynard were preparing a surprise attack to finally put an end to the notorious pirate. In the ensuing battle the next morning, Blackbeard was killed. When Blackbeard’s ship was searched, no treasure was found. Treasure hunters have long busied themselves searching for any trace of his rumored hoard of gold and silver, but nothing has been found. Blackbeard's personal ledger notes that his real treasure "lay in a location known only to him and the devil." So what became of Blackbeard’s treasure? Is it waiting to be found or simply the stuff of legend? Back In Time has been hired by an anonymous treasure seeker to go back and search the captain's quarters in Blackbeard's ship, the Adventure, and try to shed some light on this mystery. Do you and your team have what it takes to uncover the truth about the treasure or will this mission "sink" you? Sign up for this mission and find out!

We weren’t “out of our depth” choosing the advanced version of this room but rather it gave us the challenge we craved. Having played Back in Time’s other advanced-level room Vampire Slayers, we knew we could take this one on. There was so much more to this room I anticipated - not in terms of spaces explored but puzzles crammed into each space. I thought we were killing it solving so much in 20 minutes but that was a fraction of what we had left. I loved the build of the room and how each prop and set piece seemed to have a second use to it or became part of a separate puzzle later on. The pirate theme never wavered and compared to other pirate rooms I’ve done, this one encapsulated the Pirate spirit in more ways than one. The cannonball was my favorite part!

Having done about 60 rooms by now, mostly in 2025/26, this is an okay room. My partner-in-escape and I chose the advanced option and braced ourselves for a hard experience ...and ended up escaping with 17 minutes left. It has some fun pieces, but nothing completely new that we haven't seen before (other than a talking parrot. Wait no, we've seen that before, too lol). The room is pretty straightforward. There is some reading and logic required, but I've definitely had to think much harder in other rooms. It's a dim room, but they allow you to use your cell phone light as you want. Not super high tech, mainly RFID and magnets and key locks. Overall, it's a room to do but by today's standards and for experienced players, it's not a must do. It probably was great for 5 years ago though, or if you're a casual group or family wanting to do an escape room. Side note: a lot of places charge more for only 2 people, but this one wasn't worth $54 each in our opinion.

We only had two of us and we're experienced, but it was just easy/medium for us. We've been presented with much more difficulty in other rooms.

High tech

RFID and magnets and key locks make up the majority of the room..a talking parrot lets you know if you completed something correctly. That's a nice trigger.

Ideal number of players

2

2 if you're well experienced. 4 if you're casual players. You don't need more than that and it's pretty linear so you don't need more people because you can't split up

Really enjoyed this room. Our group of 4 experienced players got out with only 5 minutes to spare, which is great! Lots of puzzles and a good challenge level. I have no complaints about this room except that it is very dark and we needed our cell phone lights to help us see better. Having lanterns or something on theme to help with the lighting would have been more fun. But other than that, this is a solid room that is worthwhile!

Was anything broken?

Yes

One of the puzzles was clearly supposed to have 5 elements, but one was broken and had been removed. They appeared to have modified it to now only use 4 of the 5 elements, so I wouldn’t mark them down for this not working because at least it was workable with just the 4, but I hope they fix the 5th for others soon so they get the full puzzle as it was intended.

This game does so much right! From the very start, they ask if you’d like the Intermediate or the Expert version of the room. I chose the Expert version, and it was a super fun experience with puzzles that weren’t insanely difficult but took a good amount of time to complete. I loved the accessibility features in the room, such as having a talking parrot say something every time a puzzle was solved helped me understand when I should look for the “effect” that solving the puzzle was the “cause” for and letting me use my cellphone as a flashlight to see better. The variety of puzzles was super cool, and all on theme. Very cool experience made even better by GM John who was amazing in helping me out to complete this room solo with minimal guidance!

Fantastic room! We were four people (two of whom were first timers) which felt like a good number. Very creative hint mechanism, fun set design and puzzles, and a satisfying array of puzzle types. Beware that if you play on medium difficulty, there are a few built-in set pieces in the room that you’ll be expecting to use that won’t come up.

We did the hard option and it was definitely harder than the other rooms I’ve done. There were a lot of puzzles and a huge variety of them too. Would recommend to experienced players.

"Back in Time" really delivered with this escape room – it was a tough one, but absolutely one of their best! We just made it through by the skin of our teeth. The puzzles? Challenging, but really well-crafted. We had to ask for a nudge in the right direction a couple of times, but that's all part of the fun. If you're into brain-teasers and love a good pirate theme, I totally recommend giving this one a go. It's a thinker's delight! 🏴‍☠️🧠💡
