In 1934, Alcatraz transformed into a maximum high-security prison housing the most infamous and dangerous criminals. Situated in the chilly waters of San Francisco Bay, no prisoner has ever successfully escaped. Alcatraz has just reached its maximum capacity for the first time in history – because of you. You are all masters of escaping and no prison has managed to contain you. As highly skilled individuals you have been plotting your escape plan and now the time has arrived. A diversion has been caused by other inmates and the warden has sprinted off to help, leaving you in your cells unguarded. This is your prime opportunity to make your escape attempt. Can you escape before he returns and catches you?

As much as the rooms at Escape Reality seem highly reviewed, our experience playing ‘Alcatraz’ was lacklustre. No clear direction on which padlock to input any puzzle answer into, and confusing puzzle design ultimately marred an experience with initially decent set design. The GM hint system was fun, but as other players have indicated, the delay in receiving the hint simultaneously felt like a penalty. On the other hand, the alternative digital hint system was less than stellar—being allocated one hint per 10 minutes was frustrating, and only certain clues from this system were actually helpful. An employee shared the escape rate is quite low for this room, and it’s staggering to think that the clear majority of customers paying to play this room leave feeling disappointed and/or frustrated. The initial prison set was a strength for the experience, and the split start can be a fun experience. With further puzzle iteration and a revamp—or honestly, a removal—of the digital hint system, this experience offers potential.

As Sydney siders making the trip up, we dove into the Alcatraz room at Escape Reality in Newcastle for a thrilling prison break experience. The theming is incredibly immersive, pulling you right into the high-security cells of “The Rock” with movie-like detail that makes it feel authentic. Puzzles and Gameplay Puzzles tied well into the theme, offering solid challenges overall, though some felt more vague than genuinely difficult, leaving us scratching our heads a bit longer than expected. The hint system could use improvement—it’s a bit slow to arrive, even if the costumed game masters fit the prison vibe perfectly. Overall Experience We didn’t escape as seasoned veterans, but the fun atmosphere and quality production left us keen to return if we’re ever back this way. Solid pick for escape room fans looking for immersion north of Sydney.

This was a very challenging room! We managed to get out in a group of 2 but it definitely kept us on our toys. I loved the initial set up of the game and how the storyline flowed. I would suggest completing the other rooms at escape reality first as this was definitely the hardest room.
