It’s clear now that the visit to Tortuga was a mistake. Sailing under a common merchant flag, your orders were to gather supplies and return to the fleet. Port Royal would have been the smart choice, but considerably farther. On the other hand, Tortuga offered ways of purchasing the same goods for less. And with the money saved, you could spend a few days of mirth and merriment before returning to your captain, with no one the wiser. However, a group of pirates have taken advantage of your naivete. They grabbed you in the middle of the night, knocked you unconscious, and are keeping you in their storeroom until their ship is ready. Who can guess the plans of a pirate? But odds are, you’ll be thrown onto a slave ship and sent somewhere unpleasant for a lifetime of hard work with little to show for it. Unless you can escape before they return to claim you.

Great set dressing and build, poor puzzle design. We played the Tortuga Room. Good set dressing and nice to see puzzles based on magnetic switches and other things that weren't just code locks. We escaped, with hints. Unfortunately several of the puzzles were poorly designed - obvious solutions that ended up being frustrating when for example a lock didn't work unless you twisted it a certain (and non-obvious) way, or codes being hard to enter because of poor lighting, or a solution that depended on colours was too poorly lit to see the colours, or a solution that said 'count the number of things of this colour' and then used a completely different colour for the things to count. In all cases it was obvious what to DO, but the puzzles themselves hid the answers by frustrating implementation or mechanic rather than making you think. (We shouldn't be asking for hints that are like "oh, try moving it a bit sideways instead, it's a bit of a weird lock" after we've struggled with the first puzzle of the game for a few minutes, for example.) Also poor narrative design. Objectives didn't make sense, story didn't have a throughline that led you from objective to objective. Do a puzzle, something randomly pops open somewhere with no reason. Disappointing. We've played many, many escape rooms across many cities, and this was one of the more frustrating experiences. We wanted to like Paniq so we could play some more!

There was a brief blackout when we played (not their fault!) but the staff took care of us and kindly restarted the room!
