Karate Kai

Karate Kai presents its movie inspired set beautifully with training mats, bonsai, scrolls, Japanese decor, and several satisfying reveals. While extra fun for fans of the movie or TV show, you don’t need to know those to enjoy the room. There’s a strong mix of hands-on, tactile puzzles alongside some tech-driven interactions. I’d suggest at least four players because there’s a lot to get through in an hour. This is Downtown Escapes most difficult room, with the website listing a 10% escape rate, and after playing with four experienced players, I can see why. We wouldn’t have made it out without guidance from our helpful and friendly GM John. There were a few places where the connection between a clue and its intended puzzle wasn’t clearly signposted, along with some colors that were unnecessarily similar. None of these issues individually hurt the game, but together they made the puzzle flow less clean than the set deserved. The set design and tactile puzzle variety were the highlights for us. With clearer signposting, Karate Kai could be a stronger experience and probably have a higher escape rate.

Love the theme and the variety of puzzles . Some puzzles need slightly louder sound cues to indicate what they trigger. Such cool aesthetics and a unique theme I’ve never encountered before . Arigatou gozaimasu to Sensei John , our GM!
