32 haunts
After two years of build-up thanks to the Goring 20s scare zone and a mystery surrounding the Devil's Elixir, Room 13 ultimately was a major let-down. The experience felt last-gen, with no impressive standout set pieces or plot points. Guests wander around a hotel with various degrees of detail. Sound design was off, with a repetitious track that got tiring after a few minutes. Many rooms felt neglected and lacked attention to detail, which did not immerse me into the maze at all. I give kudos to the scaffolding area, with an effect that made me feel like we were high up the building, and the conspiracy theorist's room with all the evidence was brimming with detail. The entrance to the maze being behind a building to mimic a speak-easy was cool. But the climax and reveal of the source of the Devil's Elixir was disappointing. Equally baffling was that guests immediately exited into the arcade, a colorful technologic juxtaposition that did not mesh well with the 20s scenery. Overall, Room 13 was a missed opportunity that tasted extra bitter due to its years of buildup and debut at the 50th anniversary.
