Espionage

This was one of the first escape rooms we did as a couple after lots of experience doing rooms with 4-5 people. It felt more traditional so would be perfect for those new to escape rooms but it was still a lot of fun for us having experienced a lot of different types of rooms. Some fun surprises and clever puzzles

We had fun here. We had previously played mr peppers toy shop at their other location and enjoyed that room a lot more. This room was a little bit easy, probably better for first time escapers! Still very fun and flowed well but the narrative was not very engaging and our game master did not seem very interested unfortunately. There was, however, some really cool unique puzzles and it was still overall a fun room.

It’s a shame this experience goes for only an hour or so because I could have stood and observed and appreciated the level of decor and set design in each room for much longer. There is so many little details to notice however the clock is ticking and you do have a mission to complete! I appreciated the level of thought and consideration given to the narrative to The set design, the lighting, the soundscape - all these elements working very well together. This is a fun room to do with a few friends.

Great room, lots of interesting and unique puzzles

Very easy room and puzzles but the theme was very fun. One puzzle in particular was a favourite and very clever how they executed it. A very good beginner friendly escape room for those starting out

Another beautiful experience from Cipher! As always, the set design and props were visually stunning and thoughtfully curated. Like their other rooms, Espionage uses clever visuals and well-placed props to guide you through the puzzles in a natural and intuitive way. True to form, Cipher offers a rich variety of puzzles- diverse in type and style - ensuring there’s something to delight every team member.

The Cipher Room’s ‘Espionage’, even as it edges closer to a decade in age, is a refreshing take on the somewhat oversaturated spy theme in escape rooms. This is true for several reasons. Firstly — and most importantly — this is a female-forward spy room rooted in the classic, formative era of emerging female spies in the early to mid-20th century. I’m a big fan of James Bond, but it’s truly refreshing to experience a game that showcases some of the clever spy tools used by women of that era. Too many experiences within the spy genre feel masculine — or are explicitly so. The array of puzzles is diverse and interesting, using period-correct props to deliver an evolving narrative. Some elements are cleverly hidden, and others capture the whimsy and charm of covert gadgetry from the golden era of spy films — while a few are more hands-on and rooted in the, ahem, real world. It’s a wonderful escape room, and having played all of The Cipher Room’s subsequent builds prior to ‘Espionage’, it’s incredibly satisfying to see the evolution and refinement of their craft.
