13th Basement
Exit Game OC - Anaheim
Escape room
IRL
This room was advertised to me as a “parody on escape rooms” and I feel like this description is pretty accurate! The puzzles are not particularly hard but each puzzle we did had a story behind it and that made it all the more special. The owners, Jeremiah and Christine, were so welcoming and you can tell just how much love they put in to making this a memorable experience. Highly recommend doing this room, especially if you have beginners who are just starting out in their escape room journey. This will raise the bar for them! Parking is fine since they have a dedicated lot and their lobby had a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle arcade game. Brought back so much nostalgia. More lobbies should have things to do while you wait for your room.
40 Thieves
MindTrap Escape Room - Temecula

40 Thieves is a masterclass in escape room design. From the minute I walked in, I felt like I was about to experience something incredible. And I did. From the intro “cut scene” to the interactions with the shopkeepers to the collaborative puzzles that get your party to look around the premises and communicate, they did such a good job with everything. I could see why this room earned its spot in the TERPECA awards. This is worth the drive if you’re coming from LA like we were. I would also recommend getting a bigger group because there are so many puzzles to do!

A Christmas Inheritance
Open Door Escape Games - Main Office

I’ve had polarizing experiences with holiday-themed escape rooms - they’re usually really good or really bad. This room is really good. My first reason for giving this room a heart is because of the way they used the live actors. The live actors progressed the story and also gave us little breaks between the puzzles to engage with the story in a unique way. Then, there were the role assignments. The ideal number for this room would be 4, and that is because those 4 roles had special puzzles just for them. I did see that this room could hold up to 12 but I could imagine the experience not being as great with too many cooks in the kitchen. We had a group of 5 and I felt like we all had plenty of things to do among us. Finally, there were the puzzles themselves. There was a good combination of logic puzzles, tactile puzzles, music puzzles, etc. The diversity of puzzles was well thought out and I am curious about their Inheritance room now that I’ve seen their Christmas edition! If you could only choose one game in this location, choose this one! I do have a caveat though that Christmas is a Christian holiday so it may help if you have a Christian background, but all of the puzzles are accessible even if you do not!
Agatha Christie's Murder On The Orient Express
Escapology - Northridge
Escape room
IRL
Our recent experience left me with mixed feelings. While the room itself offered stellar storytelling and high production, it fell short in certain areas, resulting in a lukewarm overall impression. Upon entering the room, I could not help but appreciate the effort put into the ambiance. The train compartment exuded the vintage charm. However, my initial excitement began to wane as the puzzles unfolded. One of our buttons was broken and we alerted the game master that we could not complete the puzzle because the buttons could not be pressed. One of our team members had to leave the room to get their attention after multiple attempts to communicate with them through the video. This took about five minutes of our time, from the time we started communicating that the button was broken to the time that another staff member came in to rectify the sitauation, so that felt frustrating. The puzzles were coherent and leaned more into the push-lever element - with a lot more reading. It was your classic whodunit where you need to figure out the murder weapon, the opportunity, and the motive. Once you solve a puzzle, something else will open. A consistent drawback for us were the clues given by the game master. Unlike my other escape room experiences, where the game master's guidance can enhance the experience, our encounter here was notably lacking. We asked for a clue and we were given a clue that was not helpful at all. We had to exhaust our three clues, because the first clues were not helpful and our game master only realized that we had the puzzles solved after all. Overall, this esape room offers a decent diversion for those seeking a casual puzzle-solving experience. If you are a fan of Agatha Christie, you should check it out!
Agent 13
13th Gate Escape
Escape room
IRL
Out of the 8 rooms that we’ve done for 13th Gate, this one was my favorite for two reasons. First reason is that I truly felt like a spy with one of the rooms! I’ve always wondered how it would be if I had to go through a room full of lasers (not a spoiler because you can see this in their trailer video for the room). Second reason is because the puzzles actually make sense and the flow goes well with the storyline. I put a heart simply because I think this is the only room where story, execution, and our game master all worked well together for a memorable experience.
Alice In Wonderland
60Out - Melrose
Escape room
IRL
My lasting impression of this escape room is the visual aspect. The vibrant colors, oversized props, and whimsical puzzles transport to you to a fantasy realm. The difficulty level is on the relatively easier side. While some puzzles require a thorough search of the room for different items, there was never really a moment where I was stuck with what to do with the clues. Some of the puzzles have an auditory and physical component - which makes this a great choice for beginners and kids. We had a group of four, and I would also recommend four people for future experiences. Our game master did not really need to intervene. It is street parking so plan to come earlier!
Ark Of The Covenant
Cinema Escape Rooms - Los Alamitos
Escape room
IRL
One of my suggestions to Cinema Escape Rooms is for them to allow same day bookings in advance with the discount codes for the escape room enthusiasts. Knowing that my group would probably want to do more than one room at this location, I called them to see if we can get the same day bookings with the discount codes. Unfortunately, their policy is that you have to book the same day discounts right after you finish the first escape room and not a moment before, so another group could snag the time beforehand. This is just unfortunate and deterred us from doing more rooms. As for the room itself, the puzzles were of medium difficulty and the theme of Indiana Jones was pretty cool. Compared to the production value though of the other rooms, this one felt not as high compared to Home All Alone or the other ones that our friends have experienced, like The Office. We started the experience in a tent and then we go into a dark room that leaves something to be desired. The highlight of our time here was our game master, Tony! He was very sweet and made sure that we felt good about the games. He answered our questions regarding the different puzzles as well. There was one moment where the magnets didn’t work that almost took us away from the immersion. Fortunately, Tony intervened to tell us to reset the puzzle again and it worked just fine. I would not recommend this room as highly as the others in this location but it was still very fun!
Atlantis
Escape Room LA
Escape room
IRL
I’ve done a lot of Atlantis rooms before and this is definitely one of my favorites. Right away, the immersion is high up there when you walk into the room. They had a diverse set of puzzles and puzzles that I’ve never seen before (as someone who’s done close to 100). We did this with a group of 6 and we broke the record time for that week. I think a group of four to five could easily do this as well if they split up and communicate effectively. Our game master was welcoming but I still find it strange that they are in the room with you the entire time. They were not distracting or unhelpful but this is the first time that I’ve been in a room with the game master and not a live actor.
Atlantis: The Forgotten City
Hypnotic Escape Rooms
Escape room
IRL
This room is a must in LA. I haven’t done other Atlantis-themed rooms but this is my favorite so far for its immersion and puzzle flow. The start room is not impressive but once you get into Atlantis, the puzzles and the flow make more sense. They did so much with the space that they had and the puzzles were unique. We came with a group of 6 and I think that worked out pretty well because we had some newbies but I would say that a group of 4 experienced players should work well for this room. Highly recommend doing this one and I heard it’s their best room in this location.
Black and White Cafe
MindFox Escape

This room is *chef’s kiss.* Single rooms may not feel as impressive once you’ve done many as an enthusiast, but I found this to be a refresher and a challenge! We did the room with only 2 people and we only had a few minutes left before time ran out! It’s the right amount of challenge but could imagine that a group of 3-4 would finish more quickly. Overall, cute design of the room and the puzzles are fun! Would definitely want to come back to do their other rooms. The service was great too - they helped us celebrate our anniversary by posting a little “Team Denisor” on the screen of the lobby. ❤️
