Essentially a carnival midway for the 21st century. I was hoping for more puzzle-like challenges and fewer physical / dexterity challenges, but the games are all well built and there is a wide variety of different games. They have a mix of 3-5 minute “room” challenges that you do as a team, scavenger-hunt style “quests” that let you explore the space on your own — and you should do these, because the artwork is amazing — and PvP “arenas” that are a mix of arcade-game-esque and physical competitions. There were a number of rooms that were out of service during our visit (about 5) but we generally didn’t have to wait too long to do anything. I personally feel that too many of the rooms fail you after your first mistake: it isn’t fun to wait 5 minutes to enter a room that kicks you out after 15 seconds. But overall this is an interesting place that would certainly reward repeat visits. Try to go on a day when it is likely to be less crowded, though: our Sunday afternoon visit felt pretty crowded.

I don’t think I would call Meow Wolf an escape room, although there are some puzzle-like interactions. I don’t think I would call it immersive theater, because there are no live performers (but there are performances). I guess I would call it an art installation, but that doesn’t feel like a description that does it justice. I did find it fascinating and I would recommend it… just don’t ask me what to call it.
