RobotopiaOmescape - SunnyvaleEscape roomIRLI see why this game is so loved but it didn’t quite hit the mark for us. Tech and sets were awesome. If anything, there was too much to see properly in 2 hours. I would have preferred the original 3 hour experience! Puzzling was ok. Some puzzles were really fun, many were repetitive. A couple were logical leaps. Staff was unfortunately a miss. The GM was brusque and was short with someone who asked a clarifying question. (My friend asked if the briefing room had changed. They said “I literally just said this isn’t the normal briefing room”) I don’t hate walkie talkies but when we asked for an hint, the GM didn’t seem to know where we were and asked us to try things we’d already done. It felt like they were GM-Ing multiple rooms at a time and reading off a script. At the end, the GM didn’t tell us our time (no in game clock) and didn’t answer any questions about puzzles we didn’t do. Unsure if they skipped them or they were ghost puzzles or red herrings. We were probably 10 mins over time. We didn’t enjoy the live actor part, but I can see others really loving it! It was just a bit frustrating because it undoes progress if you mess up. There should have been an easier way.
Ghost LightMyssTic RoomsEscape roomIRLThis is my favourite room ever! Excellent mix of theme, story and gameplay. I got emotional at the end lol
InksidiousEscape Room 66 - Los AngelesEscape roomIRLSo so fun! Gen 1 room for sure but pretty perfectly executed. Waiting room was so adorable! Gamemaster Tuesday was wonderful. Puzzles were clever and fun. And the set design was A+
Here, Kitty KittyEscape Room LAEscape roomIRLSolid, 2 people (advanced) beginners could get through in time. cute and well themed! Some fun surprises. Puzzles were pretty standard but fun and well signposted. There was one puzzle which seemed like a logical leap but others were good. Definitely lower budget. Lots of locks!!! Some props came off in my hand but didn’t affect the gameplay. The one weird thing is that the GM is in the room the whole time. The person we had was nice, but it felt strange and they gave pre-emptive hints that we didn’t really want (even if they thought we needed them). They also told us some things were “not important” like very early on. Why not let us figure it out? I think it’s an old building and they can’t get an intercom or cameras set up. EDIT: I should mention this was $72pp on a weekend (weekdays are less) for 1 hour game. I appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into all rooms but for this level of nice but not amazing set and puzzle design that is really too overpriced for me.
