Legend has it that Erzsébet punched one of her maids after he pulled her hair a little too hard while combing it. At this stroke, a drop of blood remained on Erzsébet's hand. As the drop slowly crept down her skin, Erzsébet noticed that the blood made her skin look much younger and more vital. This gave her the idea that the blood of young virgins gave her the key to eternal youth. In the years that followed, she tortured and murdered more than 600 young girls in order to bathe and drink their blood. This earned her the nicknames "Blood Countess" and "Countess Dracula". When Count Palatine György Thurzó invaded and arrested Báthory Castle by order of the king in 1610, Erzsébet was saved from the death penalty by her family's reputation. She was locked up in some rooms of her castle for life. Her four main officers were sentenced to death. The trial of Báthory was substantiated by many gruesome testimonies. However, much of the testimony came from her heirs who obviously benefited from her death. Some maids, by the way, testified that there were never any murders. Torture of domestic servants by the rich was an everyday phenomenon in those days. In fact, there is even evidence that Erzsébet did not torture the young girls, but offered them medical help. And the massacres were no more than herbs that colored the bath water red. The fact remains that Erzsébet was convicted and died in solitude. But was she really the most bloodthirsty serial killer of all time? The truth died with her in the room complex.

This was another really enjoyable room. In terms of set design, you can tell that this room is a little older than Le Prince, but I still thought it looked very good. There were plenty of fun puzzles, and I was happy to see both combination locks and key locks. Personally, I just love having something physical to do when solving a puzzle. There’s something very satisfying about actually turning a key or hearing and feeling a lock click open! Once again, a lot of attention has been given to the experience created through lighting and sound. The room never becomes genuinely scary, but it does create a really nice spooky atmosphere. Hats off to the creators for finding such original ways to incorporate spooky effects into the room. The puzzles were once again non-linear, which made it really enjoyable to work together. Nowadays, I often find that four players is already quite a large group for an escape room. When playing with four people, never feeling like you’re missing something or simply standing around without anything to do is, to me, a sign of really good room design. We were also incredibly well welcomed and hosted, and had a very enjoyable and extensive conversation afterwards. Once again, the passion you can feel from this team is fantastic, and you can genuinely feel that passion while playing the room. We were also given a behind-the-scenes tour of the Halloween version of this room. As far as I know, this version is no longer playable, but I still wanted to give them some credit for it. Hats off to the way they found a way to potentially add an actor to the story without simply turning it into a cheap jumpscare fest. The original room was not designed with an actor in mind, yet it was clear from the behind-the-scenes tour that they had thought very carefully about how such an addition could fit into the existing story and experience. We did not actually play this Halloween version ourselves; we only saw it behind the scenes. Nevertheless, it once again shows how much passion this company has and how thoughtfully they approach the design of their escape rooms.

Elizabeth was our third stop of our mini Escape Tour Belguim. It is an impressive room, especially considering it’s 9 years old, it still looks and feels like new. The attention to detail in the theme and décor was superb, creating a highly immersive experience. The puzzles were solid and well designed, showcasing the hallmark quality of Escaping Belgium. However, with six people, it felt a bit tight in terms of puzzles, and smaller groups of four or five would likely have a better experience. Wouter, the owner, was incredibly welcoming and shared fascinating stories about his journey in creating these rooms and his experiences in the escape room world. A great room that’s still very much worth playing, with a timeless charm and engaging puzzles.
