Locked-Up Supermax

The set design was gorgeous; nice prison break tribute (you’ll know what I mean if you play it) but gameplay was very very nonlinear and some clues were a huge stretch of the imagination. My least favorite room at Mindtrap. I don’t think clues should ever come easily to players but they also shouldn’t be so farfetched either….like the associations for some clues were super weak at best. One of the locks also malfunctioned. The game master was cool. Basically almost impossible for two players; you’d need at least 3.

First time visiting Mind Trap Escape Room, but I have previously been to their Massacre Haunted House several times over the years, so I knew the set designs would be phenomenal…and Locked-Up Supermax’s set was amazing. Felt like a dirty old prison with authentic toilets, furniture, walls/bars, and access systems from a real prison. There were even some common prison sounds you would hear which added to the great atmosphere. However, the rooms and hallways were a little too dark so the darkness became an obstacle to overcome (we were not given any flashlights and told we could not use our cellphone lights). Luckily, I had 2 small key chain lights that we brought and used which made things easier to see. Although there were many different rooms to explore and a few long hallways, I feel like having more than 4-5 people would be too many. Game play was only ok and there was a lack of flow. Split start is exciting, but we took too long to get out of the cells due to puzzles not making sense early on, and finding codes we did not use until much later. As we moved through the areas, many times you would solve or discover something new, or even open up a new area to explore, and you would not have the required info yet to finish that new puzzle that you thought you should be working on. Lack of flow caused confusion and wasted time. Customer service at Mind Trap was only ok. We were treated well before and after our game, but the hint system MT uses (walkie talkie) is not ideal and wasted precious time with not fully hearing each other a few times. Also, our GM’s hints were not the best...Two times, he gave us clues for things we already solved (which told me he was not fully paying attention to our game), and other times he gave misleading clues which caused us to be more confused. Unfortunately, we fell 1 puzzle short of escaping MT’s hardest room, and if not for the poor hint system, we probably would have escaped. Overall, Locked-Up was still a good time. Visit Mind Trap for the amazing sets and immersion, but know that game play and GM’ing is only ok.

I have done roughly 5 prison escape rooms and although I love Mind Trap this specific room was my least favorite. I felt confused and nothing led to the next puzzle at all in the slightest. Usually their rooms everything is “typically” used one time, so I expected the same for this one. Unfortunately this wasnt the case. Majority of puzzles you kind of had to keep in your head until way later down the line and you forgot what you did 20 minutes prior. Overall I would recommend Mafia Heist first, then collector, vampires, and then this room next (this list is based off ONLY the rooms I have done at this location)

Prison break rooms are everywhere, and this one is one of the best I've played! I brought some family who were beginners, and it was easy enough for them to grasp, yet difficult enough for the experienced players in our group to feel challenged.

Rating: 3/5 - Decent room, I liked the set, among the better prison sets I've seen. Pros: ➕Set looked great, very detailed and appropriately weathered and made it feel like a real prison ➕Lots of tech, with only a handful of padlocks ➕Very tactile ➕Multiple areas to explore ➕Teamwork/communication required ➕GM was friendly and helpful Room for improvement: ➖Basically no narrative/story in the game beyond what's in the initial description ➖No intro video or audio, the game just starts ➖No audio/sound effects, this hurt the immersion, especially since you can hear distracting sounds from the other rooms ➖Radios required to communicate with the GM instead of something built-in to the room ➖Didn't quite flow well for me, game was pretty difficult and we seemed to get stuck a lot ➖Multiple times, something would trigger but we couldn't even hear or tell what happened ➖There was at least one ghost puzzle (disabled puzzle still left in the room) Game is a bit more on the difficult side as it is their hardest room, I'd recommend 3-4 but it's playable with 2. Super max fun room! Definitely on the difficult side especially if you are in a smaller group like our team of 2. Teamwork is very required. Set design is top notch. A well-designed dank and dirty prison set that feels more authentic compared to others we’ve been to. The puzzles are good, though be prepared to navigate dark twisted hallways on your way to the great escape. Clever finale too!

Great teeming, AWFUL Gm who basically neglected and we might as well have been in prison. We actually figured out how to escape with out solving everything but she shoved us back in the room and said we were not done.

This was a very realistic prison escape simulation. The theming was excellent and really felt like a prison escape. Highly recommended if the theme seems appealing to you.
