“To this day, this is the best utilisation of space I've ever seen in an escape room. The actual square footage wasn't that big, but the room kept going and going. Usually, I like to be involved with every puzzle, but there was no way that was going to be possible with how much there was to do here. Atmosphere and theming were awesome though it was actually pretty cramped a lot of the time. Even if you attempted to do this with only 2 people, there are several sections that cannot accomodate multiple people at a time. The game master interaction system was quite fun. If I had to ding this room on anything, it would be that I didn't feel super engaged with the story/there wasn't really much of a storyline in general.”

“Escape House Austin continues to deliver. A great fun pirate themed room with some unique puzzles I’ve never seen before. A good mix of tech and mechanical triggers. There are a lot of obvious things that are easy to overlook which make it fun. No spoilers, but make sure to look EVERYWHERE on this ship for clues. Sweeping the room again a few times we always found something we overlooked.”

“Unravel a dark, Lovecraftian mystery and strive to undo the horror currently menacing the world. Puzzle-heavy, excellent use of space, and a story that builds. Some parts may be difficult to access for folks with limited mobility. Our GM, Ky, was lovely!”

“Another absolute banger from Escape Hour - This room is best for larger groups and requires strong communication and trust if you want to escape. We experienced this game with 6 people and that felt like it was the perfect amount, however, I can see much larger groups participating in this room and still enjoying themselves. Puzzles are solid, and the environment is immersive.”

“Overall, another solid room by Escape Hour. I’ve done tons of escape rooms, but this was my first scary room that I had played. Although I think I would have enjoyed it more without the fear element, we still had a great time. There were a handful of very innovate puzzles, but even the traditional-style puzzles were still fun. Lots to explore, and the staff was incredible as always. There seemed to be less puzzles than I’d usually expect, but the pacing was good due to being slowed down by the lingering fear of a jump scare.”

“So we did not get to do the scary version because we had a young kid with us that didn’t do so hot during chapter one. However this still had a spooky feel to it and I’m sure the sense of urgency and scary would have been dialed up. This felt like a run down danky hotel and was done very well. If you play Chapter One this is a must play.”

“This room was such an absolute delight! Great puzzles, everything very original. And this was clear this more of a 20,000 Leagues room rather than a submarine-themed escape room. Some really fun puzzles, and a great "emergency" when your sub is "invaded"! This company has more games coming with the company itself and their rooms all tied to famous novels.”

Remember those point-and-click adventure games where you’re locked in a room and have to solve puzzles to find the key and escape? Those online games were the original inspiration for the live escape rooms you’ll find all across the world today. An escape room is an immersive experience where you (and your team of 2 or more people) are locked in a room with a series of puzzles for 60 minutes. To escape and win the game, you have to look for clues, solve the puzzles, and find the key. While most escape rooms only give you 60 minutes to complete the challenge, others may have shorter or longer time limits. Many venues are private rooms where you and your team are the only players. However, some places may pair you with other groups who booked a slot at the same time. And don’t worry about getting stuck, asking for hints on a difficult puzzle is totally normal. While the original escape room (created by SCRAP in 2007) had a fairly simple aesthetic, today’s escape games often take you into a different world. Artistic set designs, secret doors, and unique interactive elements are all part of the fun. It’s like an adventure game that you can interact with in real life. But if you’re hoping to preview any rooms before you book a game somewhere, detailed images and videos can be hard to find. To keep the puzzles a secret and preserve the experience of seeing the room for the first time, most venues only offer a few photos or a short trailer about the room’s theme or narrative. The only way to know what it’s like is to go and try it for yourself!
