I played The Saga, this was the second game in the trilogy. This room had a much darker atmosphere than the first, creating a completely different experience. The puzzles were enjoyable and satisfying to solve, and while the interactive immersion was just okay, it still fit the story well. Overall, it was an interesting room with a unique change in tone from the first installment.

After the comforting innocence of Castle Fluffendor, the trilogy took a dark turn and left us in Dark Lullaby. Much of what I said of Castle Fluffendor holds true, especially the pitch perfect blend of strong puzzling and idiosyncratic set design. What was so impressive, however, was how it was essentially the opposite of Castle Fluffendor in tone yet felt entirely cohesive within the world of Chimera Corp. While Castle relied on magical, whimsical connections and interacting with the cast of characters, Dark Lullaby frequently used innovative, low tech mechanisms (alongside amazing and invisible tech) to create a grittier, more rugged experience. It perfectly deconstructed the whimsy of the previous game while having its own kind of wonder, especially in how the game played with perspective and skewed the mundane much like Fluffendor. By the end, we were not only prepared for the epic conclusion of this trilogy, but experienced a masterpiece in its own right.

Gameplay

The puzzles were on the same level of quality of Castle Fluffendor but also felt entirely different in their own way, perfectly fitting into the world.

Atmosphere

Wow. Dark Lullaby really did feel like a child’s nightmare, surreal and a little cartoonish, but nevertheless deeply terrifying.

Particularly interesting or different

Like Castle Fluffendor, Dark Lullaby replicated a child’s perspective to a staggeringly effective degree, this time adding a malicious tone.

The overarching story began to come together, while the individual storyline in this room was deeply effective.

An amazing horror game (horror advisory below, it’s not too scary) that combines a beautifully dark atmosphere, strong scare moments that are all very different from each other, and great puzzles all strung together with a cohesive overarching story that expands beyond the nightmare world the dream is set in (and that’s not even talking about the game’s role in the Chimera Corp Saga as a whole). This is a horror game, but I wouldn't say it’s prohibitively scary for most players, mostly because of the clear distinction between points to work on puzzles and points to work on scares. That’s not to say you won’t be scared in the puzzle points (you’re still in a pretty creepy atmosphere, though I never found it too offputting) or that the scares are dialed back at all. The only horror aspect I wanted more from was the main character you interact with. They are almost always played comedically (relying on a certain phobia I guess I don’t have to be scary. A lot of people will find this character scary though). Also for such a cohesive game, this particular character is only tangentially related to the main plot and feels out of place. The gameplay dispersed between scares are great, tying in elements of the world, elements of the overall story, and even evoking some fears (I didn’t know I had) through just the contents of them. They’re also all really fun. Just like how they didn’t let the puzzling take away from the quality of the horror, they also didn’t let the horror take away from the quality of the puzzling. As I keep mentioning, the game has a pretty cohesive story that gives meaning behind both your own actions and meaning behind the nightmare itself. And both of these plotlines are separate from the main horror things going on. It’s really impressive that it manages to make both of these things very prevalent (in fact, there’s so much going on that until I wrote this I forgot these plotlines were even part of this game). And if you’re playing the Chimera Corp Saga experience (which you should), this story gets you invested in the characters and world more than I even realized while playing it. The saga is emotionally and dramatically anchored by this game while still succeeding as the standalone horror game of the trilogy. And then you get to the finale scene. Wow. Everything horror and story is perfect here. The puzzles are at their most phobia-triggering, the atmosphere is at its most foreboding with some great sound they were saying they recently added, the scares are at their scariest, and yet on top of these climatic scares you still have a satisfying conclusion to your own story and an explanation of the dream itself. I love this game, and I came out of it wishing nothing more than that there was more of it. I have never been more blown away and had as much to say with the quality of a 60 minute game. If you think you can hold up with a mildly to moderately creepy atmosphere and a handful of strong (though not unexpected) scares, go play this game, preferably as part of Chimera Corp Saga. If you’re doing the Chimera Corp Saga it’s funny because they never break character until the end of the last game, but they still treat you really well while in character.

Story

It is so rare that there’s a game that I really want to give a heart rating of story to. Usually there’s always something that I wanted more of. But I had no issues with the story here. (Not that there’s much of it, it’s just what’s there is perfect for this game.

Scary

Scary

(Maybe slightly spoilery horror advisory) It’s definitely scary, but I would say if you’re on the fence about horror you should do it as long as you’re okay with some moments of anxiety and some phobias being triggered (especially if it’s the reason you don’t want to do Chimera Corp Saga). There are actually very few (if any, depending on how easily you get jumpscared) actual jumpscares or unexpected moments. Instead the horror is all very heavily telegraphed moments. They can be very unnerving when they’re happening, but nothing unexpected will happen. You also have a lot of comedic moments and the majority of the game has no direct horror.

The second room of the saga and wow, what an incredible story line this is turning out to be. This room is on the spookier side, and was done very well! From start to finish, we were so engaged in this room.

Such a creepy but fun room with some great jump scares. Our GM Conner AKA "Peepers the Clown" was awesome. He definitely jump scared us several good times but also had me rolling laughing. The puzzles were fun and fit the theme. Theming was really good as always at EA. This room was a great continuation of the Crimera Saga story. They were running a little behind because they were having some tech issues but thank goodness the owner Will and team were able to get them fixed because we really enjoyed the room.

I should start by saying I hate jump scares and I’m a big chicken when it comes to horror. And also Dark Lullaby is one of the best immersive experiences I’ve ever had. It is for sure one of my top scary rooms of all time. How scary is it? It was a little more on the spooky side for us but there were enough intense moments to push the needle to scary. If you aren’t experienced with spooky rooms, you might be more scared. But there are also wonderful moments of lightheartedness. I trusted the live actors and enjoyed clowning around with one of them. I also felt safe solving the puzzles without feeling I would get overly scared. There are a few silly jump scares but nothing that threw off our puzzling. The finale is unforgettable! My partner who hates scary rooms loved this one and considered it her favorite of the Chimera Corp Saga trilogy. And yes, I highly recommend to play all 3 with this game sandwiched in-between the opener Castle Fluffendor and the finale Help Wanted. Even if you are a scaredy-cat like me, it is absolutely essential to play Dark Lullaby to understand the connecting throughline of the overall story. Even if you get easily scared like we do, I think it’s still worth it to grit your teeth and face your fears!

My wife and I got a chance to do the now #22 rated Chimera corp saga. It did not disappoint. —— Dark Lullaby was probably my least favorite due to the fact that I tense up when playing horror themed rooms. But when I say “least favorite” it does not in anyway connote that the room was subpar. Still a superior room and a worthy segment of the Chimera saga. For me it’s just the fear of jump scares that gets me. It’s not the actually characters that scare me, but the anxiety of the possible jump scare that distracts me ultimately from enjoying the rooms and puzzles. So this is a bit of a biased review. That aside, if you like scary rooms you would absolutely love this one. Despite the scare factors, I found it had solid puzzle work in addition to the immersive story telling experience. And honestly the horror wasn’t too bad. We’ve seen worse. ——- I advocate for people to do the whole trilogy. Speaking with the staff afterwards, there’s a bunch of sequences and story added between the rooms that really enrichen the experience in the trilogy play…and makes just doing the rooms as solo plays, fairly lame.

We've played all their rooms, and Dark Lullaby was definitely my favorite. I like actors in escape rooms as they add an element of excitement. A couple of the puzzles were a little weak, but overall, I'd highly recommend this game for the way the storyline blends seamlessly into its ambiance.
