Camp Ruby Lake: The Lady of the Lake

Camp Ruby Lake: The Lady of the Lake

Deadline Escape Rooms

This is two separate experiences that take place in the same room. We played both with a team of two. Unrelated plot lines except that they took place in the same โ€cursedโ€ campground. I could absolutely see there being more stories that happen in the same space too, and kinda think I spotted what might be a puzzle for a future episode. Lady of the Lake This was the easier of the two. Fun and enjoyable. The one issue is that there is a puzzle which can be solved before you have all of the clues you are supposed to need. We did so, and then later when we uncovered the missing clue, the GM needed to break in and say โ€œactually you donโ€™t need to use that anymoreโ€ฆโ€ The website says this has โ€œmore jump scaresโ€but there was nothing I would consider jump-scary in the room at all. Itโ€™s perfectly safe if you (like me) donโ€™t really enjoy them. Blood Moon The harder of the two. But not by too much. The issue here is that the last two tasks in the room both relied on tech which was โ€œfiddlyโ€ to the point where you could know exactly what you needed to do, but have a hard time triggering the tech. Both rooms were a little pad-lock heavy. All in all very good rooms. Just not as good as the other offerings at Deadline. Honestly though you should just play all the rooms at this place.

OUTLINE Escape Room

Full disclosure, this was our last room after a long trip, so we were a little fatigued even before we showed up. But things went wrong from the very beginning. We entered the space where signs on the wall directed us to deposit our remaining payment in cash into a machine which would dispense the key to begin the experience. We were unaware that this was going to be necessary, and so didnโ€™t have a spare 100โ‚ฌ in cash on hand. We left to go find a bank, but weโ€™re called back into the room and they dropped the key presumably on the understanding that weโ€™d sort it out at the end. (We later determined that the info that payment would be needed in exact change and in cash was on the website, but not on any of the confirmation emails. We had booked well in advance and hadnโ€™t looked at the website in weeks. Once inside, the atmosphere was good. Creepy-dark. The big problem is that it was too dark to read. (And they were adamant about no external light sources.) We struggled through the first handful of puzzles, all the while being haunted by ghosts who felt more annoying than scary, And we eventually got to a lock situated in such a way that we could not even guess at what numbers were on the dial. After briefly trying to move the refrigerator to which it was attached so that we could read, we eventually gave up in frustration. We raised our hands and called the safe-word they had given us for people who wanted to leave the game. They did not stop the game. We tried several times and eventually just started wandering back through the pitch black hall looking for the emergency exit. (Heaven forbid thereโ€™s ever a real emergency thereโ€ฆ) They eventually caught on that we were quitting and came out for a brief exit interview. Turns out they didnโ€™t even have their English translator there. (We had requested an English content gameโ€ฆ ) To their credit, they refused to take our payment for the game. And they were very friendly. But the experience itself was not fun at all. Trying to be as fair as possible: Some of our bad time may be because we were tired and perhaps a little cranky. Some of it was definitely because we are older and have issues with reading in low light. But the GMs could have made this all work for us, and did not at all.

By most standards, this room would rate a โ€œloveโ€ - but it is competing against a lot of really great rooms in Barcelona, and itโ€™s showing itโ€™s age a bit. Several of the props are worn/chipped, and we had at least one significant tech fail. Itโ€™s worth going if youโ€™re doing a lot of rooms in the city, but if youโ€™re looking for just the cream of the crop, you can skip this one. (Like all Barcelona rooms, expect to crawl, climb, and get sweaty/dirty)

Excellent room. Outstanding set. More physical elements of climbing and crawling than you would see in an American room, but not an outrageous amount. Puzzles and challenges were all solid. Nothing was super difficult or too guessy. It felt as if the GM were rushing us a bit with hints (mostly directing us where to focus rather than hinting at solutions) but he had a right to be rushing us! We showed up nearly half an hour late due to going to the wrong location originally. We were happy to have been allowed to play at all. Anyway, this is a very fun room. Not a โ€œmust doโ€ as some have said, but definitely a โ€œrecommended โ€œ

Great room! Huge! So much to do. Many physical tasks - climbing crawling shooting dodging. (Bring knee pads for the crawling, there is rough ground with dirt and rocks. ) But the physical tasks still had a puzzlyness about them. Very well done. The set was gorgeous and extensive. The plot was great and the game contained many hidden references to other sci-fi, Easter eggs that can be found, and multiple different endings depending on your choices/performance. Simply fantastic. Searching for anything negative to say at all, and all I can come up with is that you will get dirty , sweaty, and possibly wet. So be prepared.

Nice sets, and good puzzles that were well integrated into the theme. Very well done on both counts. Just two negatives. 1) at one point a prop suddenly dropped and smashed my finger pretty badly. The injury could have been avoided with a simple door that didnโ€™t open until the prop was released. 2) one of the puzzles in particular boiled down to โ€œguess what the puzzle designer was thinkingโ€ I still recommend playing this game. Just watch you fingers.

A strictly two-player game, which uses a quite small space very cleverly. The puzzles were unusual, but in a couple of cases a little โ€œundercookedโ€ - we had one puzzle we solved before finding all of the pieces โ€œnecessaryโ€, and one where the tool provided was low quality and it made the puzzle very finicky to solve. The โ€œtwistโ€ at the end was very predictable - in fact I did predict it before we went into the room, and annoyingly, it had no impact on the puzzles at all, so it could have been a much more creative answer to the question. With a little bit more effort this rooms could easily be turned into a โ€œloveโ€ rating. As is I still recommend it if you happen to be in town with a 2nd escape enthusiast.
