Scooby-Doo™ and the Spooky Castle Adventure

Escapology - Universal City

  • Escape room
  • IRL
A decent escape room that can be good for beginners or families but marred from broken technology and unenthusiastic staff. The greatest highlight for this room is how it incorporates decent set design with the Scooby Doo theme. The cartoony and colorful props sometimes feel ripped out of the show itself, all punctuated with voice acting from the real voice actors themselves. Fans of the series will gleefully recognize callbacks to familiar monsters and locations. Sadly, the entire experience is bogged down by shoddy equipment and unenthusiastic staff. At least 3 times during our escape, a lock failed to open or trigger after a successful solve. This led to a lot of wasted time and confusion, and sometimes we weren't even sure if we were correct or if a prop just came apart. Some staff members seemed like they didn't want to be there at all. The one who walked us into the room sped by the rules so fast as if it was a waste of time explaining them at all. Not all the staff felt like this though. Some were really nice and helpful. The puzzles didn't feel like they connected or made sense story-wise. Some were creative, but they existed for the sake of existing. A few of them felt illogical - spoiler alert, but we needed to stick a prop into a fireplace, and there was nothing indicating that was necessary. Story was sort of stapled together, nothing enticing or intriguing. It was fun to hear the Scooby Gang, though. Since this company is prominently featured at Universal City Walk, it can be a great introduction for newcomers to the world of escape rooms, but if they continue to neglect the quality of their rooms, they'll do more harm than good for the community in turning away potential fans. And at $50 a pop, they should offer better experiences.

Carnival - COMING SOON

13th Room

A delicious dive into a demented funhouse, Carnival is a fun Halloween treat that encourages exploration, both external and within. When my group and I first pulled up to the location, I was very amazed - The 13th Room had found the perfect spot for their latest venture, and it greatly set the mood for the rest of the night. In fact, the location, along with the costumes, characters, lighting, sound, set decoration, and attention to detail all add up to form a memorable experience. The brilliant use of dark and light in the various scenes within the whole adventure elevated the night, and their use of space to give the illusion that we are in a bigger area was really well done. Additionally, the actors know how to play off of the crowd, and I had a great time interacting with them. Eddy, the creator, was a fun and giving host, and as the night progressed, we all felt comfortable enough to play and let loose with other attendees and the actors. It felt like a collaborative event where we all were having fun together. Surprisingly, the content can get very deep and personal, offering many opportunities at introspection. They won't force you to reveal your inner demons, but they offer the chance to voluntarily share some personal feelings with the crowd. While this might not be welcomed by everybody, I appreciated the contrast between light-hearted fun and deep reflection. Other than the main event, the show offers an excellent assortment of themed cocktails, homemade cookies, and other snacks. Plenty of 1-1 opportunities are available. For an additional fee, you can also interact with the fortune tellers. There is comfortable seating throughout, and the place has a dedicated bathroom with plumbing, which is very much welcomed. I had a great time at the Carnival and look forward to more offerings from The 13th Room.

Nightmare Rising

Nightmare Rising - Opening Oct 2

Nightmare Rising

  • Haunt
  • Haunted house
An ambitious project that has a lot of potential, Nightmare Rising can become a household Halloween name in the SoCal scene if they take time to improve on certain aspects. The one thing Nightmare Rising excels at is employing dedicated scare actors who love interacting with guests. Zombies run at you full force, knife wielding maniacs sneak in the dark, and wolf girls appear in the most unexpected places. The scare actors here love what they do, and it shows. Another positive is the variety of experiences they have. Shooting zombies with gel blasters and playing flag football in a zombie survival experience are 2 experiences that take advantage of the location Nightmare Rising takes place in, which is an airsoft/paintball arena. You don't really see these offerings in other nearby haunts, so it was refreshing to see something new. Additionally, they have a traditional haunted hay ride as well as a trek through the dark woods in their Troop 13 event, which is a small immersive experience. However, other than these 4 experiences, there really wasn't much else to do. The site advertised things like food and axe throwing, but I did not see that when I went (it may have changed since then but I'm not sure). On top of that, the hayride and Troop 13 experiences were closed due to rain, which, when combined with the steep prices, was disappointing and left me feeling unfulfilled. Other than that, I felt like the decor and set design were a little lacking. There were some cool animatronic characters, but they didn't really feel "on theme". They were setting up some awesome house facades, which I heard were being converted to hold more decorations and scares, but these were empty shells when I went. The central hub which connects all experiences could use some polish. This can be a great event for those seeking a more thrilling and active experience and can be a hit with teens and the younger crowd. With their huge allotment of space, dedicated troupe of scare actors, and unique experiences, I feel like Nightmare Rising can grow to be considered a staple in the yearly SoCal Halloween haunts, but they will need to work more towards that goal to give a fulfilling experience.

A creative and entertaining romp that puts you directly into the pages of a comic, Inksidious is a fun escape room that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Inksidious is a home run on all fronts. It's got tons of inventive puzzles, an easy-to-follow yet intriguing story, and excellent set design. What seems like a simple experience slowly progresses into so much more. There are enough puzzles to occupy every member of your group, and each one is unique enough so they don't feel repetitive. The story has an interesting twist after its first act, which reveals a set that is lovingly crafted with details and fun props. This room is a labor of love, and it shows. While those who have color blindness might have difficulty during the first half of the experience, they will find an accessible experience during the last half, which makes this a great room for those who have it. Additionally, the theme, story, and puzzles make this a great room for families to enjoy together. So much of the room was tactile, allowing those with shorter attention spans to feel more engaged and interactive. Outside of the room, Jules and Tuesday were excellent hosts. My group and I felt genuinely welcomed, and we had an easy time talking to both of them. This room is a family-operated business, and I love to see more getting attention and attendance, especially when you can tell that they were created by passionate people who love the craft, like Inksidious, here. I highly recommend this room to everyone who enjoys a fun atmosphere filled with tons of puzzles and great story.

Ghost Hunter

Ghost Hunter

Escape Room Era - Lake Forest

  • Escape room

An exciting idea that still needs more fleshing out, Ghost Hunter was a thrilling experience that needs polish and an overhaul in their safety requirements. I participated in the Ghost Hunter experience with 3 other people. We opted to forgo the "extreme" option, which involved tasers. When Ghost Hunter works, it works spectacularly. They excel at making you feel paranoia and doubt, never knowing who or what to trust. There were moments where I found my heart racing, and that sweet feeling of fear creeping into my veins. Some set pieces and ideas felt inspired and imaginative, and the last act ramped up satisfyingly. But sadly, those moments are scattered amidst a slew of dead zones that really drag the experience down. First off, my biggest criticism, is the lack of safety involved. There are tons of moments of complete or near complete darkness that require guests to climb or descend steep stairs, sometimes even encouraging guests to run up or down them in moments of action and fear. During one intense sequence, my friend ran and slipped on a rug, smashing their leg on a coffee table. This completely took me out of the experience. Imagine what it would be like for guests who partake in the extreme experience with tasers! Eventually the game masters noticed and turned on dim lights anytime we had to go on a stair case. If anything, I implore the creators to please revamp their safety precautions for the sake of the guests. Another large point of contention that my group agreed upon was the long periods of downtime in between moments of the game. Slight spoilers ahead: 2 members of my party got possessed, which meant they were considered temporarily out of the game. While this was fun at first, it quickly dragged to the point where they were sitting on a couch doing nothing for 15 minutes straight. Other times, our group had to be separated. Now, as I understand, there are only 3 employees managing everything, including acting and manning the controls. What this means is that while one person is getting attention, the other separated group members are waiting for their scene the entire time. I myself was trapped in a closet for around 10-15 minutes, just waiting for something, anything, to happen. Remember, my group totalled 4 people. So while the game lasts 100 minutes long, a good chunk of that time is spent waiting for your turn. Other than that, the game needs a good amount of polish. Most set pieces felt unfinished - half of the play area takes place in what looks like an unfinished house - mostly wooden beams, wooden frames, and wooden stairs, with no props at all. The lighting and sound are good, but the best decorated area of all was the lobby, which acts like a "safe zone". Nothing felt like we were in an abandoned toy factory. The story needs serious work. After our experience, we spoke with one of the game runners, and they said that the story was newly implemented and is a few weeks old. A lot of the story did not make sense and felt cobbled together. Overall, I cannot in good conscience recommend the game until they revamp how they approach safety for the guests. It is only a matter of time until someone seriously gets hurt.

A wonderful and unique experience, Dr. Hader's Cartoon World is a standout room with an indie feel full of creativity and story. What immediately sets Dr. Hader's apart from other rooms is its unique premise. Sitting proudly at a separate table during lunch hour away from the tried-and-true tropes of prisons and aliens, Cartoon World boasts a story intermixing lost love with comic book hijinks. The experience has an engaging plotline filled with details that carries throughout the entire room. Unfortunately, to get the true ending, a group must be fast enough to not only escape in time but to finish a series of bonus puzzles at the end (more on this later). The scenery emits a strong creative spirit that feels homemade and filled with love, something akin to top tier home haunts during the Halloween season. The animated sound effects and cartoon inspired visuals strengthen the experience. However, the room suffers some drawbacks, mainly in its deteriorating technology. Multiple props and machinery in the room were unfortunately broken or unreliable. At several points, our group had successfully solved a puzzle but wasted a few moments until we were told via hint system to try again. Some doors that were supposed to open automatically did not. Sound was a little low, making it hard to hear key audio clues. The room also features a series of bonus puzzles, which are to be attempted after completing the main quest. I love the idea of bonus puzzles, but this was somewhat of a mixed bag amongst our group. While hiding the "true ending" behind the bonuses is fair, we were told that a group needs somewhere between 15 - 20 minutes of extra time to complete the entire bonus set, which seemed a bit excessive for me considering that the main quest had tons to do already. This makes this room perfect for larger groups, but for our group of 4, it was sadly out of reach. Overall, I highly recommend this room for its uniqueness and creativity alone. If your group is looking for something a bit more animated, make sure to give the good Doctor a visit.

Wizard's Treasure was one of the most magical experiences I've had in an escape room, with its incredible theming, creativity, story, and puzzles forming a potent potion of delight. Set design, lighting, and sound work together to create an incredible atmosphere reminiscent of the impeccable detailing of Disneyland. From the moment my group and I started the game, we were whisked into a magical world brimming with detail. Bringing the world to life are various characters (with actual names!), fully voiced and having different personalities. Lighting and sound play important roles and add a depth of immersion to the sets. The room evokes a playful mood throughout its entire run, making for a joyful experience. On the topic of playfulness, all puzzles in this room were fun to interact with and solve. Each one was unique and fit perfectly into the story; no prop or puzzle felt out of place. Puzzles are non-linear and can be solved with more than one person, which makes this room great for larger groups. This is a perfect room for beginners wishing to step into the world of escape rooms, as well as families wishing to try out rooms with their little ones. Puzzles flow smoothly and are not too difficult, making for a smoother experience, and the themes are family-friendly. The sights and sounds are sure to keep younger players engaged. Be warned, however, that this room can be incredibly easy for more experienced players. Those looking for more of a challenge might want to consider other rooms, but I encourage all enthusiasts to give this one a go for the sake of the experience alone. Alex, our game master, was a delight to work with. Our group finished in 20 minutes, but Alex allowed us to spend our remaining time in the room trying out puzzles that some of us missed. This was much appreciated and was the first time I experienced that. This 60Out location is also one of the most entertaining ones, with secret puzzles that can be found in the lobby and elsewhere (I won't spoil the surprise here)! For those looking to embark on a whimsical adventure with extremely strong theming, look no further - Wizard's Treasure is sure to satisfy that itch.

At times, the room felt like a class lecture on scientific topics. This is not a con, and for this reviewer, I applaud its efforts at fusing learning with play. The room does a fantastic job at demonstrating the various science experiments and lets players interact with them, somewhat like a hands-on science museum. Little placards with background information on each experiment imparts knowledge to those wishing to learn more. Puzzle design leans toward the stronger side, with many of them sticking to the theme of the room. Difficulty varies between easy and medium, but none of them struck me as too difficult. High praise goes to the efforts at making the room more accessible for those with disabilities. One color-based puzzle had the colors paired with numbers, making the puzzle solvable for those with color blindness. I hope to see this trend continue so more people can enjoy these games. However, plot and set design are relegated to the background. The introduction to the story was fun but afterwards didn't really play a part in the room until the very end. The sparsely decorated rooms felt somewhat appropriate, but did not feel lived-in. Props and puzzles jut out as the only decorations in the room, further detaching the players from any immersion. One aspect of rooms I don't like is when they rely on small items that can be easily lost, and sadly this room is guilty of that. One key item of the game is about the diameter of a pencil eraser and can easily be lost if a group is not careful. I recommend smaller groups for this game, as most puzzles are large enough for only 1 or 2 people to operate at a given time. The room is also fairly small, making it harder to move around with more people. Tucker, our gamemaster, was welcoming and friendly. He was attentive during our gameplay; for example, he fixed a malfunctioning prop immediately, saving us from wasted time. He also engaged with my group and I in friendly banter before and after the game, making us feel welcomed. Time Machine is worth a try if you are more interested in puzzles and/or learning and don't mind the lack of atmosphere or decor.

Hotel Who is back with their 3rd event, and it's great to see them constantly improving their formula. Compared to Love Story, La Seance takes a more intimate approach with a smaller crowd, allowing guests to interact more with each other and with the characters. This also helps guests understand what is going on at all times. I was amazed to see that all fellow attendees dressed to the nines and participated heavily in the roleplaying aspect on the date I attended, which elevated the experience further. With this type of show, the more you put into it, the more you get out. The higher tiered ticket includes a meal and an extra hour of showtime. The feast was delicious and offered a variety of food, including dessert. However, with the limited time set aside to eat, I found I couldn't enjoy it as long as I'd have liked to, especially since the show still went on while we were eating. For those more invested in the story, the worth of the ticket is in the extra hour, as it provided more backstory and plot elements. Acting remains strong as ever, with actors expertly improvising and playing with other guests while displaying physical and vocal talents. We get the sense that these characters are fully realized individuals, rather than 2-dimensional NPCs meant to move the story along. One of the strongest highlights of any Hotel Who show is how they encourage guests to work together. It's always fun to hear wild accusations flying around and to listen to other players' theories. La Seance continues this tradition and throws in a ton of clues and red herrings, making the ending not as predictable. Unfortunately, with 4 stories to climb, the experience is not accessible to those with mobility issues. Be prepared to stay on your feet for most of the night as seating is limited. It can also get pretty crowded, so those with anxiety around crowds may want to reconsider. There are also only a few bathrooms on site. If you enjoy role playing, interactions, and murder mysteries, make sure to pay Castle Ivar a visit to participate in La Seance.

Fangs! is an excellent immersive theater adventure that offers strong performances, story, and atmosphere, with plenty of opportunities to have a 1-1 experience. The setting alone, the Mountain View Mausoleum, perfectly sets the tone as guests creep through the dark marbled halls with nothing but a dimly lit lantern guiding them. Kudos to the staff and actors for perfectly navigating the labyrinthine corridors. There's nothing like hearing a distant scream echo from unseen chambers while surrounded by tombs. Performances remained strong throughout the night with energy and enthusiasm. It was great to see audience members start to build bonds with certain characters, making them all the more invested in the story. While I wasn't chosen for a 1-1 this year, I found multiple lucky participants plucked from their groups to go on a solo journey with another character. The engrossing plot had perfect pacing. The mystery and tension steadily built up as the night progressed, culminating in an exciting turning point and climax. Backstories are slowly revealed, uncovering deeply buried motivations and explanations. It is worth sticking around afterward to talk with other guests to fill in plot details, as one will not get the full story on their first runthrough. For those wishing to attend, expect to spend most time on your feet, as you will need to walk and climb stairs to reach different scenes. Those with mobility issues may find this experience difficult. Fangs! was a real treat this Halloween season - make sure to take a bite out of this morsel before it disappears.
