Whatever Happened To The Garretts?
Maze Rooms - West LA
Escape room
IRL
This was by far the best escape room we have ever played. From gameplay to set design to it just never ending. Ticks off everything on my list of what an escape room should be and beyond.

Probably my second favourite room here or I’d probably tie it for first with the prisoner room! Both equally interactive and immersive. The rooms are incredibly designed.

This room was really disappointing and so lack lustre. This is supposed to be considered the BEST escape room in LA but unfortunately it did not live up to the hype. I’m fairly sure the reviews have to be fake because there is no way this “escape room” if you can even call it that is legit. Don’t get me wrong the set is amazing but the game itself SUCKS. In every room the puzzles are very basic, and you only have 45 min to get through these rooms (and NO HINTS) which is not enough time for even fast players. Also there’s really only 2 rooms and a trailer on the set as the “third room”. The LIVE actor takes up quite a lot of time talking instead of getting to the point. We just felt so sad leaving having drove quite far to 1. Not even escape and 2. Have such a disappointing experience. The staff also ask you to tip as you’re leaving which makes the experience incredibly awkward. I would not recommend going here. You’re better off booking a room with maze rooms or quest rooms. This whole place just feels like a scam to take your money and give you a lack lustre escape room under the guise of being “the best escape room in LA”

Definitely my favourite room here mainly because of how interactive the game play is. It really feels like nothing is off limits in this room even as far as unscrewing bolts on fixtures. It is a very smart thinking game!

One of my favourite rooms!!! Just book it if you haven’t already! I’m not usually a fan of the Egypt theme but omg this room is INCREDIBLE. It NEVER ends!!! There was only one “puzzle” I really didn’t enjoy that involved digital snakes. It was truly frustrating but everything else was absolutely mind blowing.

The set was actually incredible and the flow from each room was truly exciting, however the puzzles were just “okay”. It was a bit confusing because we kept getting held up over the prop manuals and diaries thinking we needed information from them but they didn’t really help at all. Also has a very unique ending ;)

The Basement: A Live Escape Room Experience

Bare with me as this review may be lengthy! Let me preface by saying this was the first and only room we’ve tried at the basement so my opinion is based only on this room. Because of the high ratings we expected so much more but my overall consensus is that it seems overhyped due to there being a live actor included in the room. Below are the things I wish I knew before booking: 1. I don’t prefer escape rooms that are less than 3 rooms and this one was basically only two rooms that you have full view of from the get go. 2. You’re only given 45 min instead of the standard 60 min to escape. However, if you looked at just the game play it would probably only be 20 minutes… a lot of the time is taken up because there are no clues given to you at the start until the live actor joins and later hints at things by moving around certain items. The live actor is also somewhat involved in the game play so their acting can take up some time as well. 3. The group starts split into two different areas and so the first puzzle took us about half the game time which was incredibly frustrating as we had no hints to assist us. 4. It’s linear game play but there’s a major clue that’s provided in the first room at the beginning of the game that is to be used at the very end of game. I don’t particularly enjoy escape rooms that use this type of strategy. When I read linear I usually expect the clues that are in that particular room to be used in that room. Overall we were overly terrified for no reason mainly because we assumed there would be jump scares or that the live actor portraying a blind maid was going to do something to us. None of that was the case thankfully god! However looking at just the game play it was sub par and room variation it was very sub par. Truthfully I’ve enjoyed doing some of the better rated rooms from maze rooms and quest rooms than this one. I think there’s so much room for improvement.

Our GM was amazing!! However the escape room itself wasn’t the best. We left feeling like we wasted our time because there were no puzzles or anything to solve it was mostly just watching a video or interacting with the LIVE actor. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for an escape room to play. I now understand what people meant by “experience” in the other reviews. However the experience was lack lustre
They're Coming
Maze Rooms - Culver City

We had a decent run in this room but I wouldn’t say it was a favourite of the maze rooms. There were not as many rooms in this one compared to the other rooms we’ve tried at other locations. The design felt a bit cheap because a lot of the scary elements were just tech screens on the walls that had an image on them. I would give this a 5/10. The game is linear and flowed well, if you are VERY observant you won’t have a difficult time with the puzzles it’s just about connecting the dots. The same designer created the “what happened to the garrets” room and that one was so much better. I would say the steampunk Alice and garrets room are much more exciting than this one (they are at different locations).

This escape room was put together beautifully just like most maze room sets and we really enjoyed how the game kept going. However, the puzzles, although they were easy, were frustrating in terms of what to do next and when. For example we would find a clue in one room that wouldn’t even be required to be used until the next room was opened. So it left us confused for quite a bit. It was somewhat linear but because of the clue confusion it wasn’t that linear. If there was a rating between thumbs up and down I would choose that. It’s worth playing if you have already completed the garrets room. But choose the garrets room if you’re at this location.
