Karate KaiDowntown EscapesEscape roomIRLKarate Kai presents its movie inspired set beautifully with training mats, bonsai, scrolls, Japanese decor, and several satisfying reveals. While extra fun for fans of the movie or TV show, you don’t need to know those to enjoy the room. There’s a strong mix of hands-on, tactile puzzles alongside some tech-driven interactions. I’d suggest at least four players because there’s a lot to get through in an hour. This is Downtown Escapes most difficult room, with the website listing a 10% escape rate, and after playing with four experienced players, I can see why. We wouldn’t have made it out without guidance from our helpful and friendly GM John. There were a few places where the connection between a clue and its intended puzzle wasn’t clearly signposted, along with some colors that were unnecessarily similar. None of these issues individually hurt the game, but together they made the puzzle flow less clean than the set deserved. The set design and tactile puzzle variety were the highlights for us. With clearer signposting, Karate Kai could be a stronger experience and probably have a higher escape rate.
Madness: 1917Doors of DivergenceEscape roomIRLI highly recommend playing Heresy: 1987 first, before moving onto Madness: 1917 to get the full beauty and depth of the storyline and the magic that Doors has in store(s). Our second playthrough of both games the next day led to noticeably different puzzles, actor interactions, and outcomes, making the experience feel fresh rather than repeated. About 90% of the puzzles were unique each time we played. We really vibed with the storyline the second time around, and are thrilled with our outcome! Long live our queen [spoiler]! The actors are phenomenal and do far more than simply play a character, they make the entire world feel alive. One of the most enjoyable parts of replaying the experience was watching the same actors step into entirely different roles, each with their own goals, personalities, loyalties, and hidden agendas. We were especially impressed by the range Kat and Annmarie showed as their stories evolved in completely different directions across our playthroughs. We already know we'll be returning to the Paradox Bar. There are still many paths unexplored, too many choices unmade, and almost certainly more chaos waiting for us to quell/unleash.
Heresy: 1897Doors of DivergenceEscape roomIRLWe played Heresy: 1897 and Madness: 1917 back-to-back over two days, and the replayability is mind-blowing. It was amazing to see how the choices we made in Heresy completely altered the storyline, puzzles, and characters we interacted with in Madness. And then were different again the next day for our second playthrough. The actors are incredibly talented and truly bring the world to life. Watching Annmarie shift from innocent to intense, and Kat completely transform right before our eyes was spectacular. We enjoyed every interaction with all the characters at Doors, they're such a friendly bunch of people trapped in time. I absolutely cannot wait to return to explore the other storylines and see where our choices lead next! See y'all again a week ago, in nine months, and in 1917.

Easily the best-designed room I’ve played! They said "go big or go home" and gave us a multi-level masterclass in all things escape rooms.
Defenders of the Sunken RealmThe Keepers of BalanceEscape roomIRLThe submarine was amazing, felt like a Disney ride! Atlantis was gorgeous and ethereal. More physically challenging than Temple of Light. Would recommend playing this room first to better appreciate it's beauty before experiencing the over the top extra-ness of Temple.
Ghastly Escapes - Ch. 1 The Bag ManMasterpiece EscapesEscape roomIRLThe most fun I've had being "kidnapped". The flow of puzzles and pursuit kept the adrenaline high without ever feeling rushed. Nice variety of puzzles to keep us on our toes. The sets are fantastic, capped by a finale that absolutely delivers. We enjoyed the backstory and lore. It was nice that The Bagman was an equal opportunity menace. Even while being "captured" I never felt uncomfortable. I liked that they provided a non-contact option for our friend. Also there’s no timer in the room, so that doesn’t break your immersion. Play it and you'll see why it received a TERPECA Top Room nomination in 2024 and 2025.
Container 51Game On Escapes & More - Boxyard RTPEscape roomIRLContainer 51 surprised us in all the best ways. There’s an impressive amount of tech packed into this room, but it never felt like tech just for the sake of it. The programmed moments and screen interactions felt intentional and helped move both the game and story forward. One of my favorite parts was the shifting narrative. Instead of one static storyline, new information is revealed as you progress, making it feel like you’re uncovering what’s happening piece by piece. I also loved how Game On incorporated the actual shipping-container location into the theme. Overall, this was a polished local room with strong storytelling, fun interactions, and some genuinely memorable moments.
Wild WestBreakout Games - GreensboroEscape roomIRLWe saddled up for the Wild West room, and it sure didn’t disappoint! The set design was mighty impressive and pulled us right into the frontier. The puzzles and audio fit the theme perfectly, and that split start at the beginning was a hoot. A nice mix of locks and tech kept things interesting, and our Gamemaster Val was as warm and helpful as a campfire on a cold night.
Exhibit Sea: Secrets of the DeepEncrypted Escape - West ReadingEscape roomIRL5 out of 5. Best sub room we've played. If you liked The Depths from The Escape Game, this one blows it out of the water. Excellent story, set design, lighting effects, and twists and turns. Bound to be a TERPECA nominated room. 75 minutes was the right amount of time for this room. We got out with 10 minutes to spare with two but less experienced players will benefit from the full 75.

Undaunted Escape Rooms]Escape roomIRLTech & Treasure on the High Seas 🏴☠️🦜 No Quarter may not be in a big city, but it plays like it's in one, and this company is punching above it's weight class in terms of their quality. This pirate-themed escape room surprised us with smart tech, a fully decked-out ship (there’s an above AND below deck!), and a bonus puzzle track for speedy/experienced solvers like us. There’s not a lot that feels off-the-shelf, they've given some great thought how to implement a satisfying escape room experience. We got to nerd out with one of the owners afterwards who told us how he painstakingly aged each board in the room over several days, and that care and attention to detail is obvious throughout the room. A rare gem for this area that's definitely worth sailing into.
Adventures in Wonderland - CLOSEDWondermore Escape AdventuresEscape roomIRLThe set design was impressive, with each area offering a unique look and feel that perfectly captured Alice's story. The puzzles were inventive and tied cleverly to the narrative, with minimal reliance on traditional locks. The last puzzle was a real head turner. However, the room is beginning to show signs of wear and tear from frequent use by younger players. It remains a creative and fun experience, but it's worth keeping expectations in check. It sounds like the owners have some fresh ideas brewing, and we can’t wait to see their next room!
Top Shelf Elf - CLOSEDKey to EscapeEscape roomIRLIf you’re looking for a fun and festive escape room, this one’s got it all—cute Christmassy vibes and even twisted Christmas carols! 🎄🎶 Highly recommend going with at least 4 players for the best chance to escape, but if you’re just playing for the holiday fun and don't need to finish it all, 2 works too! The mix of high-tech features and classic locks kept things interesting, though we needed a few hints for clarity. Owner Roger was our GM and is super warm and friendly.
ClueBreakout Games - GreensboroEscape roomIRLWe love the 80s Clue movie with Tim Curry and enjoyed playing the board game as kids, and were curious to see how well the Clue room at Breakout Games would live up to the source material. Like the game, our goal was to find out who, with what, and where. The room had a touch screen that showcased all the choices that we used to eliminate possibilities along the way - this bit of tech was essential in keeping up with the goal and immersing us in the game. They incorporated the potential murder weapons so well into the game play, and since we're used to seeing things like candlesticks and ropes in escape rooms, it didn't dawn on me immediately the significance of why they were in this particular room. The infamous color-coded characters of the game were mentioned throughout, and it felt like they were just a room away from us. The only misstep was a color coded puzzle where several of the colors were hard to distinguish and we spent a lot longer on that puzzle than was needed as a result.
City with No SunNerd EscapesEscape roomIRLCity With No Sun was an unforgettable escape room experience—all in complete darkness ⚫️! To solve this room, we had to rely entirely on our other senses: touch, smell, sound, and even taste. From tactile puzzles to a smell challenge and more, every moment felt unique and immersive. We started in separate rooms, communicating to reunite by solving parallel puzzles. We’ve done a split-start room before, so I made some assumptions based on that previous room how things might work but I was wrong. It’s a great reminder that every escape room is its own adventure. Though the room was pitch black, I felt totally comfortable. However, it might not be ideal for those who are uncomfortable in the dark or prone to claustrophobia. If you're an experienced player looking for a new challenge, I highly recommend it. Just keep your group to four or fewer players to avoid feeling cramped—and definately play a few other rooms first to build your skills!
Decipher: Reactivated [prev. Decipher]Downtown EscapesEscape roomIRLThe puzzles were challenging, fun, and well-suited to the theme, with clever mechanical and electronic elements that enhanced the experience. The use of audio and lighting added to the atmosphere, and the final puzzle was a thrilling conclusion to the story. One standout feature of Decipher is the unique start: players begin handcuffed and blindfolded. While this may sound intimidating, it fits the narrative and surprisingly you can still accomplish a lot with one hand handcuffed. Our game master, John, was friendly, helpful, and enthusiastic. He offered just the right amount of hints to keep us moving without giving anything away.
Sasquatch: Bigfoots Revenge!Escape The NetherworldEscape roomIRLSasquatch: Bigfoot's Revenge is a captivating escape room experience that immerses players in a thrilling narrative from start to finish with an evolving story. The puzzles are cleverly integrated into the mountain cabin setting, adding to the overall authenticity. Even though there were more locks than we like, they made sense as part of the story. The game master played a character that fit within the narrative as well. He was great about giving us hints when we were stuck or off track. As the name suggests, the Sasquatch theme is a prominent element throughout the game. Frequent jump scares, coupled with the narrative, create a suspenseful atmosphere. The room's conclusion is both satisfying and memorable, leaving no doubt that players have successfully completed their quest - which was more than just to escape. Netherworld's expertise in haunted house attractions is evident in the high-quality effects and production design. Anyone else trying to make a Sasquatch room will have big shoes to fill.
Tiki IslandEscape The NetherworldEscape roomIRLWe embarked on a tropical getaway unlike any other at Escape The Netherworld's Tiki Island room. The theme was not merely a generic "tropical islands" setting, but a fully immersive experience that incorporated the mystical presence of tiki gods. Every element within the room, including the character portrayed by our game master, seamlessly aligned with the island hut theme. The puzzles were ingeniously crafted to complement the setting, with one particular puzzle featuring cutting-edge technology that we had never encountered in an escape room before. There were quite a few locks in the room, but the way they created the atmosphere made up for that. The way they used light and sounds for some fairly spectacular effects that really got your attention and focus was some of the best we've seen in a room so far. The way the story developed through the room was excellent, increasing the tension and excitement as the time went on. The conclusion was far from ordinary, offering a showstopping finale that left a lasting impression.
NosferatuEscape The NetherworldEscape roomIRLWe were excited to dive into the spooky world of Nosferatu at Escape The Netherworld, but unfortunately, the experience was more terrifying for the amount of locks than for the theme. 🧛♂️ The room was dark and spooky looking with a nice set design, not surprising given Netherworld's reputation as a haunted house. The storyline leading into the room was intriguing, and the finish was dramatic and had a great sense of acomplishment. However, as a Gen 1 room, it was filled with locks of all kinds. The non-lock puzzles were time-consuming, making it difficult for us with just two players. Todd spent the bulk of the time trying to solve the larger puzzles while I ran around unlocking a billion locks. A few design choices left us scratching our heads, like the inclusion of an Egyptian sarcophagus in a vampire-themed room. And the subtitle "Van Helsing's Secret" seemed a bit misleading, as there was only a brief mention of the famous vampire hunter. 🧐 The room is recommended for four people or experienced players. Have four players even if you're experienced! Doing this room with only two experienced players was PUNISHING. We only managed to get out on time due to our GM Mark carrying us through some of the ending puzzles. If you're only going to play a few rooms at Escape The Netherworld, I'd suggest keeping Nosferatu locked in his coffin and go play Sasquatch or Tiki Island instead.
The Inventor's EnigmaEscape Artist Greenville - DowntownEscape roomIRLThis puzzle-heavy escape room from Escape Artist Greenville was packed with clever and unique challenges, blending traditional locks with high-tech surprises. With just the two of us, we had to do a lot of running and shouting between rooms to solve everything—definitely recommend at least three players for this one. The room's lighting and sound effects added to the atmosphere. As always, Escape Artist Greenville impressed with their immersive storytelling: themed waiting areas, game masters in character, and set designs that felt theatrical. While this room didn’t quite match the mind-blowing brilliance of their top-ranked experiences (Starlight Motel, Help Wanted, Dark Lullaby, and Castle Flüffendor), it’s still a solid, well-executed escape. Perfect for both newbies and experienced players—just play this one first to fully appreciate its charm before tackling the others!
