SleepDown the HatchEscape roomIRLWhat do you do as a follow up to the #1 game in the world? If you are in Hollywood, you make Molly’s Game 2: The Sequel. But if you are a designer who loves escape games, you ignore the rearview mirror, try something completely different, and let the audience decide how they feel about the new one. Well, this audience member loved Sleep and highly recommends it! Sleep had a lot of story, utilizing actors. There was quality puzzling, and a detailed set that was very cohesive with the narrative and puzzles. While Molly’s game wowed me with its set transitions, this game really gave me an emotional sucker punch that left me breathless. Kudos to Down the Hatch for another outstanding game.
MidniteOuterGround Escape RoomsEscape roomIRLI’m going to say this simply… I really love what they create at Outerground. Midnite is the third game I’ve played here, and I love their passion for escape game design. Jason’s Legacy had a beautiful, engaging set full of surprises, The Execution elevated the prison scenario, and now Midnite takes on the horror genre. This game combined horror elements you’d find in Athens with a campy story and an oversized theater set, that felt like we were in a real movie theater. Go have fun playing this game. I can’t wait to see what they do next!
House of Twisted MindsEscaperoom AmersfoortEscape roomIRLThe designers of this game have created a quality game similar to what we’ve experienced in Athens—horror presented with story, emotions, and meaning. This game is not just about jump scares, it’s about the psychology of what makes an emotional situation terrifying. Be aware of the subject matter references in the game description if you are concerned about emotional triggers. Worth noting the quality set and integrated puzzling. Joins Rock City as a reason to get to Amersfoort. BTW, we’ve stayed in Amersfoort before. Very good opportunity to be away from the standard touristy places; very walkable with lots of good local restaurants.
Into the DarkVerseDarkPark DelftEscape roomIRLInto the DarkVerse felt a bit like a pop up game rather than something permanent. And while I’ve heard some enthusiasts downgrade this game for the lack of decor, I thoroughly enjoyed everything about it. Between the style of play and the many nods to all things DarkPark, it was a fun experience. There are two well known games in Paris that use the same mechanic. I haven’t played them yet, and wasn’t sure if I wanted to, but now after playing DarkVerse, I really do.
Expedition BermudaOne Hour LockupEscape roomIRLFun well-developed set and with features I’ve rarely seen in games. Really felt like we were on a ship in the Bermuda Triangle. The story had some nice twists, kept you guessing. Some easier style puzzling, but still fun to do. Worth playing if in the Amsterdam area.
Aurum - Order of GoldBackspace Escape RoomsEscape roomIRLAurum was built with a unique approach to sharing the tasks across players, which took some figuring out. Much of the puzzling required thinking outside the box. I enjoyed the challenges. The story was well executed, but the cold start was a bit of a stumble and could have been smoother. Definitely a good game for puzzlers.
Escape the Wild WestEscape VeessenEscape roomIRLThere is something uniquely special about this Wild West game. Sometimes I play a game that hits a sweet spot, and it’s not about an over the top set or actors or tech. It’s just that someone builds a game with heart, shares that with the players, and says welcome to my place. This game, out in the countryside, is worth the drive, just to put a smile on your face and remind you about why you love escape rooms.
Sorciers [Witches]Le DonjonEscape roomIRLFanciful game with a good story, and creative puzzling. Fun interaction with in-character game host. Nice set and plenty of story and character development. An overall enjoyable experience.
Levenswater [Water of Life]EmmelockedEscape roomIRLA really nice game, with a mix of challenging puzzles. An original story set in a fairytale fantasy. Unique game clock fit right in to the story.
The Asylum Le DonjonEscape roomIRLI liked the set on this one and the creepy actor interactions. After playing a bunch of horror games in Athens and Spain, I’ve become somewhat immune to the horror jump scares, but Asylum still got us a couple of times.
Zone 51 [Area 51]Live CinemaEscape roomIRLAmazing immersive experience! Earns the name Live Cinema. Set is comparable to Legendary Adventure in Spain. Not really puzzle focused, it was more about the action adventure. It’s a blast!
Le Grand Hôtel De ParisThe One EscapeEscape roomIRLThis was a spooky room with similarities to games we’ve played in Athens. Set is very detailed and is utilized in puzzling and to create the spooky atmosphere. While the puzzling was not especially difficult, most of it was on theme. Actor interactions worked really well. Highly recommend this game.
ArbrevilleDe Gouden KooiEscape roomIRLAnother amazing game from this design team! Beautiful scenery, good story, creative puzzles. Loved the pre-game build up of emails and video. Type of game that every new space makes you pause to take it all in. Very different direction than Hans Revenge and St R, but even more elaborate. I won’t spoil the fun, just go ahead and book this fantastic game.
Harbor HotelTheStartEscape roomIRLWe enjoyed the Chernobyl game on a previous trip, so we had to come back to try Harbor Hotel, and I’m glad we did. We’ve played quite a few horror-type chase games and this one was more puzzle-y and less endless chasing, making it very enjoyable. There were some unique puzzle types mixed in with some standard stuff. Kudos to the game host for making it fun, especially when they fixed a small goof-up from a misplaced item.
Monster MashersTales of Torchdale - Monster MashersEscape roomIRLWe played in dark mode and this was one of the most memorable game starts I have ever experienced! This was a terrific game with lots of fun scenes, character interactions, quality puzzling, and a super fun set. Lots of humorous moments. I would consider this a fun spooky game, not really meant to be scary, just more campy fun like if the gang from Scooby-Doo cartoon created an escape game! Highly recommend as one of my all-time favorites!
I can hear youEnteredEscape roomIRLBeen playing a lot of horror games this year from Athens to Spain and now Belgium. We hadn’t played Gricers yet, but wanted to try this revived game that was very popular in its original version. Happy to say it is still a quality experience. We felt the pressure of the menace, especially in the spooky setting. The gameplay utilized the spaces effectively and forced us to confront our fears. Well done!

La Tienda de Te dell Sr MiyagiDon EscapeEscape roomIRLWanted to enjoy this more than I did. Good story and play on the Mr Miyagi theming. Pat Morita would have liked the homage, but the actor was tough to understand through the mask. (…and he nudged us just a little too much.) Middle of the game puzzling was really creative and the ending was a fun nod to a style of Japanese video gaming. Game leaned into humor, which added to the fun. But I didn’t like a couple of jokes that were in poor taste, and could be received offensively. Another game in Spain that does not match the expectation of its TERPECA ranking. But of course that’s just this one voter’s opinion.
