It is a hot summer in Mechelen. Temperatures have been swinging out of control for several weeks. People are looking for cooling and the demand for new air conditioning installations is booming. The successful firm Aircotech, led by Michel Aerts, is urgently looking for new installers. Maybe you are the new talent he is looking for. Apply today for this dream job! Meanwhile, the news has been dominated for several days by a remarkable break-in at the Inram Research Center. Some unsavory types made off with a particularly dangerous product…

“De Wraak van Han (or Han's Revenge) has been in the top lists for many years, and was on my wishlist since it opened. Fair to say, expectations were high, despite not knowing what the game actually is like. You get a beginning of the story (it is your first day working at an air conditioning company and you need to go out to fix a faulty airco unit) which is already a bit intriguing in itself. The story that unfolds however is much more interesting than what I expected! This one plays like a short film. It's a true journey, with so many different rooms that I actually lost count on how many scenes there were. This room is huge! From the initial simple city street to the final battle, everything is so well executed. The theming feels very detailed and puzzles are perfectly integrated. Nothing in this room or in the story feels out of place. Time absolutely flies by and I would have loved to spend some more time in every part of the game to explore all its details. There are some great surprises and a couple of well hidden wow effects to keep the jaw dropping going, although nothing is super spectacular. It's hard to say if it lives up to the mythical proportions that it has taken on in my head, but it deserves all the accolades it got and I'm so happy we finally got to experience this room.”

An old legend tells the tale of the cowardly murder of Saint-Rumoldus, patron saint of Mechelen, around the year 770. In the vicinity of Mechelen, deep in the forests of the rural town of Hombeek, Rumoldus realised his plan to build a small church. Much against the custom of his time, he paid his construction crew a fair salary for their work, leading the locals to suspect that Rumoldus had to be exceptionally wealthy. During an evening stroll on the church grounds one night, Rumoldus was mugged by two men. They beat him to death and robbed him of what little money he had on him, before dumping his body in the river Dijle and fleeing the crime scene. A couple of days later, a passerby noticed a magical light shining over the water. Rumoldus’ body was recovered from the water and serenely laid out in the church. Ever since, a devoted congregation has been watching over his grave and church. Every now and then, ‘miracles’ occur in the church of Saint-Rumoldus: tears start to well up in the eyes of the saint statues, candles suddenly light up near the shrine… That is why believers from all corners of the country come to visit the church to honour Saint-Rumoldus. Out of the blue, you receive a call from pastor Albay, nowadays the custodian of the church. Impressed and driven to despair by recent “abnormal activities”, the priest was forced to flee from the church. He now needs your help to find out what is going on and to discover the cause of the miracles…

“This was the third escape room we played at this provider. I won’t go into detail about the location again, as I’ve already covered that in my other reviews. As usual, we received an email beforehand that introduced us to the story really well and made us curious about what to expect. This room actually surprised us in a positive way. Despite its age, it’s still a really fun escape room. Of course, there were a few more traditional padlocks than you would typically find in modern escape rooms, but that didn’t affect the flow of the game at all. The setting was well designed and fitted the theme and story nicely. The story was also inspired by the history of Mechelen. However, you shouldn’t expect a historically accurate experience. The room mainly uses historical figures as inspiration for its own storyline. Even though we went over the time limit, the staff kindly allowed us to continue playing at our own pace and finish the room. We really appreciated that, so a big thank you again! Overall, despite its age, this is still a really cool and enjoyable escape room that we had a lot of fun playing!”

Your “Botanist Manor” mission will transport you to the heart of Scotland, to Kirkwall, in the Orkney Islands. In 80 minutes, you will have to infiltrate a mysterious escape game called “TimeGates”, owned by the eccentric Ewan McAllister in order to find the trace of Sarah Fisher, a journalist who disappeared a week ago. Herald Scotland investigative journalist Sarah Fisher disappeared without a trace a week ago near Blair Manor. This historic place has today been transformed into an escape game center, called “TimeGates”. Your mission if you accept it is to use the time machine to go back a week in the city of Kirkwall. On site, you will have to infiltrate this escape game by pretending to be ordinary customers and thus try to save the journalist before it is too late. Over the last 5 months, local police in Kirkwall have recorded around thirty unsolved disappearances of tourists traveling in small groups. This normally peaceful region is today plunged into uncertainty and fear, investigators suspect the actions of a serial killer. Ewan McAllister, the owner of Blair Manor, is a renowned botanist, specializing in the study of tropical plants. Following a personal tragedy, the loss of his son, Ewan McAllister changed his career direction and moved away from the scientific community. He has since created a mysterious escape game called “TimeGates” in his family mansion, now suspected by local police of being a cover for other activities.

“Modern high-tech room with lots of (touch) screens and videos via which the story was delivered. The story itself was multilayered which was very fun in some parts but slightly confusing in others. Broad variety of puzzles and tasks, some super easy, other we needed a bit of explanation in the end because the solution was 100% self-explaining. Overall a great experience and a recommendation to play :)”

Your mission “Tokyo Lab” will take you to the heart of the Japanese capital. Within 70 minutes, starting from an alley in Shibuya, you will have to infiltrate a research center that was abandoned in the 80’s, gain access to a clandestine lab and neutralize a deadly virus created by a mysterious company: “Crawford Industries”. You will have to use the time machine to arrive 70 minutes before the catastrophe: A highly dangerous virus has been leaked from a clandestine laboratory located in the very heart of Tokyo, the abandoned premises of the Genedine Pharmaceutical Biotech Center. For several years, one of our agents on site, Toshiro Itsuki, has been watching this place from his cover: a Japanese restaurant. He knows how to get into the building but has been missing for several days. We need you to pick up his trail so that you can break into the center and neutralize patient zero. After 70 minutes, the time loop will close and you will be teleported back to the present, whether you succeeded or not. We are counting on you! Created by Dr. Kobayashi and his team in the 1980s, the Genedine Pharmaceutical Biotech Center aimed to treat patients suffering from mental disorders with the help of artificial intelligence. This revolutionary treatment, called “Phoenix”, ensured a complete cure in just 3 days. However, as the results fell short of the researchers’ expectations, and after the revelation in the press of the methods used, which are now considered a crime against humanity, the center ended up closing its doors and has since been abandoned. Dr. Robert Nakamura, an eminent Japanese specialist in genetics at Crawford Industries, has taken over part of the empty premises of the Genedine center. His objective: to create a clandestine new-generation Biosafety Level 4 laboratory and produce a virus capable of transforming any man into a super soldier. According to our sources, it seems that an accident inside the laboratory caused an explosion, releasing the test subjects on which Nakamura and his teams had tried their various products. These hyper aggressive and highly contagious patients have in turn contaminated the Tokyo population, all too quickly for the Japanese authorities to contain the danger.

“Nice room design especially the first part. Unfortunately we needed a bit to get into the flow in this room as some of the first tasks didn’t feel intuitive to us. But once we were in the flow it was a great gameplay and fun story.”

More than 30 years after the nuclear disaster, a new and more dangerous form of radioactive radiation has been discovered in the prohibited part of the nuclear power plant. These rays allow humans and animals to contract an extremely dangerous mutational disease . Fortunately, a team from the MML (Military Medical Lab) has managed to secretly develop a serum, but then disaster strikes… All communication with the MML team is abruptly cut, so it is assumed that everyone died of the virus. However, a still working camera has recently detected movements in the forbidden areafrom the central! Blurred images show an unrecognizable, confused person. One of the researchers has probably survived with contracting the extremely dangerous mutational disease as a result! The disease causes sudden vision loss, peeling skin and an irresistible urge to be attracted to sounds and light. Now it's up to you to retrieve the serum and prevent another Russian scandal!

“The experience may hit differently for some, especially if they haven't done this type of "don't say a word" horror before, but this can't compete with the unique fun of Harbor Hotel for me. Most of the puzzles are underwhelming, particularly at the beginning, and the actor interactions sometimes overstay their welcome - getting in the way of active puzzling and story, rather than enhancing it. That said, one of the most interesting logic puzzles I've ever done comes about 3/4 of the way through this game, and it's still a good time - enough to earn the heart!”

The Harbor Hotel was founded in the 1990s by Herman and Ann Biesma , together with their son Dieter, they ensured that it was a pleasant place to stay for various travelers from home and abroad. Dieter is an insecure young man and it is all because of his difficult childhood. In primary school he had a really hard time with the persistent bullying and in secondary it only got worse! Life at home was also not very pleasant for Dieter , thanks to his father who regularly abused Dieter's mother. Dieter, thinking it couldn't get any worse, faced the biggest shock of his life. His whole world was turned upside down…

“We enjoyed the Chernobyl game on a previous trip, so we had to come back to try Harbor Hotel, and I’m glad we did. We’ve played quite a few horror-type chase games and this one was more puzzle-y and less endless chasing, making it very enjoyable. There were some unique puzzle types mixed in with some standard stuff. Kudos to the game host for making it fun, especially when they fixed a small goof-up from a misplaced item.”

Nov 1917 The First World War is raging in Belgium. Belgium is largely occupied territory. Only in the Westhoek, especially on the Yser, did the soldiers manage to hold their ground. The Belgian army mainly aspired to a defensive approach. This was not to the liking of some brave soldiers who wanted more action to defend their homeland. Therefore, some soldiers formed a select group and deliberately sought information from the opponents, sought prisoners of war and carried out specific attack actions to serve their country. The Patrols were born. Despite their headstrong approach that also endangered their own lives, they achieved many successes and could count on the support of the army commanders and their corps mates. Bitten by the heroism of these soldiers, you decide to join the Patrols. Your mission seems very clear: to blow up a machine gun nest of the opposition. Can you locate the exact position of the machine-gun nest of the opposition? Will you make it through No Man's Land in one piece? Can you gain sufficient knowledge about the explosives to be used? In short: can you combine good cooperation and courage so that this attack attempt is Patrol worthy?

“Although this has one TERPECA nomination, it isn't talked about as much as some of Belgium's bigger and flashier games. I think that's a shame. The set isn't massive but it's great fun to explore, and it's beautifully designed and suits the theme. The puzzles were solid and I appreciated them even more when I learned that the owner had based some of them on actual codes used in WWI. All in all, I think this is well worth playing.”

“Another fabulous room at this location. The theme is beautifully realised and evident in every puzzle. The puzzles were varied in difficulty and style, and we found this worked to our advantage. This room requires a good memory and some solid team communication, and there’s also a physical element for all team members. It was an absolute blast and we found ourselves taking it quite seriously during the final countdown. We’d highly recommend this fun game and we’d happily return to play their other games.”

How Do Escape Rooms Work?

Remember those point-and-click adventure games where you’re locked in a room and have to solve puzzles to find the key and escape? Those online games were the original inspiration for the live escape rooms you’ll find all across the world today. An escape room is an immersive experience where you (and your team of 2 or more people) are locked in a room with a series of puzzles for 60 minutes. To escape and win the game, you have to look for clues, solve the puzzles, and find the key. While most escape rooms only give you 60 minutes to complete the challenge, others may have shorter or longer time limits. Many venues are private rooms where you and your team are the only players. However, some places may pair you with other groups who booked a slot at the same time. And don’t worry about getting stuck, asking for hints on a difficult puzzle is totally normal. While the original escape room (created by SCRAP in 2007) had a fairly simple aesthetic, today’s escape games often take you into a different world. Artistic set designs, secret doors, and unique interactive elements are all part of the fun. It’s like an adventure game that you can interact with in real life. But if you’re hoping to preview any rooms before you book a game somewhere, detailed images and videos can be hard to find. To keep the puzzles a secret and preserve the experience of seeing the room for the first time, most venues only offer a few photos or a short trailer about the room’s theme or narrative. The only way to know what it’s like is to go and try it for yourself!
